Algeria’s Energy Growth
According to reports last received, Algeria has over 12 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. Exploration over the past few years has led to the discovery of more oilfields and the proven oil reserve estimates could increase in coming years. This will provide a great thrust to the economy more so as the fall in domestic oil consumption in Algeria is being substituted by natural gas.
Liberating Women through Handicraft Promotion
Economic independence is a proven route to the emancipation of women. It is especially valuable for those whose circumstances do not allow a complete education. A steady flow of income builds both security and self-respect. Conservative communities may have other obstacles which bind and oppress women. Perhaps issues related to discrimination against women are so deep rooted that no single measure can wipe the slate clean immediately and alone.
The Notre Dame of Africa
The Cathedral of Notre Dame d’Afrique stands high above the city of Algiers, overlooking the sea. A mixture of Roman and Byzantine styles of architecture, with Moorish influences, it is a magnificent edifice built between 1858 and1872 when Algeria was occupied by the French. Notre-Dame d'Afrique can be seen conspicuously on a shoulder of the Bouzareah hills that stand two miles to the north of the city in the Bab-El-Oued district.
The Glorious Struggle of Assia Djebar
She is a symbol of the general plight of Algerian women, and has played a stellar role in the emancipation of all Algeria. Oppressed women can find solace in her words, symbolically penned under a surrogate name to placate her literate but conservative family. She has not been recognized by the Nobel Prize Committee, though she has a plethora of awards in her cupboard.
