The Deeply Meaningful Art of Affif Cherfaoui
On 31 October 2007, Algerian artist Affif Cherfaoui was in attendance at the event marking the opening of his retrospective at the Musée National Zabana in Oran, Algeria. The following day, 1 November, is a national holiday in remembrance of the 1954 declaration of armed resistance against the colonial government of France which resulted in the Algerian war. The timing for the opening was coincidental, but nevertheless appropriate, because this tumultuous period of Algeria’s history has had a profound effect on Affif Cherfaoui, which is reflected in his artistic works.
Escape to the Intriguing Town of El Golea
El Golea is exactly what you would expect an oasis to look like. Located in the Sahara Desert, in Algeria, the town is near to Ouargla and Ghardaia. It is also known as the southern gateway to the Sahara Desert and has an estimated population of 15 thousand residents. Most of the inhabitants of El Golea and the surrounding area are Zenete Berbers and depend on agriculture for an income. The town has become a popular tourist attraction in Algeria because of its historical sites, magnificent views and the traditional people of the town.
Taghit d’Or Short Film Festival
In recent years the film industry in Algeria has been the focus of great concern. Even though the public is still hungry for great films and to loose themselves in a magical story, it seems that the film industry in Algeria has been in swift decline. Cinemas have been closing rapidly all over the country, and those that have remained have been marred by deterioration and the lack of preservation. But, authorities have been trying to restore the industry and rebuild interest, and one of their latest projects is the Taghid d’or Short Film Festival.
The Oran Tramway Project
The city of Oran is located in the northwestern region of Algeria and has grown into a significant commercial port. It has a large industrial sector and in the last few years, transportation in the city has become a major concern. Even though buses were added to alleviate the transportation problems, it still was not sufficient to cope with the high numbers of students and local residents traveling to work and back. At the end of 2005, authorities starting working on the Oran Tramway project; getting designs and opening the project for construction tenders.
Resort Life at Sidi Fredj Peninsula
The spectacular tourist development of Sidi Fredj located on the Sidi Fredj peninsula in Algiers Province, Algeria, was designed in 1968 by the French architect Fernand Pouillon under the direction of the Algerian authorities. The resort was inspired by Ghardaia, a traditional city in Southern Algeria, and has all the amenities one would expect of a world-class tourist resort area. The Sidi Fredj resort area is about 45 kilometers from the international airport of Houari Boumedienne making it easily accessible to tourists from far and wide.
