Skikda is city in the north eastern flanks of Algeria. It is noted for being a very important port on the Gulf of Stora, the ancient Sinus Numidicus. Skikda was founded in the year 1838 by the French colonies on the ruins of an ancient Phoenician city that later flourished as a large Roman city called Rusicade, a Punic word which means "Promontory of fire". The Roman port was destroyed by the Vandals in the 5th century.
Skikda was actually known as Philippeville until the end of the Algerian War of Independence in 1962.
The city took a huge knock after the war, but its inhabitants managed to rebuild many of the buildings as well as build several new modern neo-Moorish style buildings. Today the city has a population of nearly 1000 000 residents. Oil refining, natural gas and petrochemical industries were developed after the war in the 1970's and oil pipelines have been built for the transportation of oil to Skikda's neighboring cities.

It also has a petrochemical terminal port and a smaller fishing port in Stora.
