United States Embassy in Algeria
The United States of America only had a U.S. Consulate based in Algeria until Algeria gained their independence from France. The U.S. Embassy in Algeria officially opened on 29 September 1962. Between the years 1967 to 1974, all United States related matters were dealt with through the U.S. Interest Division within the Algerian based Swiss Embassy, due to a break down in relations between Algeria and the United States. On 12 November 1974, those relations between the countries were reconciled and the United States Embassy has upheld those relations ever since.
Algeria has become a strong supporter of the United States and has also supported the efforts of America in regard to the war on terrorism. The United States Embassy in Algeria promotes America within Algeria and is dedicated to increase strong economic and political relations. The Ambassador in Algeria at the U.S. Embassy is Robert Stephen Ford. He is originally from Maryland and was confirmed as Ambassador by the United States Senate on 27 May 2006. On 11 August 2006, Robert Stephen Ford was sworn in as Ambassador and took up his duties. As the Ambassador he oversees the U.S. Embassy in Algeria and is responsible for the relations between the U.S. and Algeria.
The United States Embassy in Algeria is divided into different offices that specialize in their various fields. At present the embassy has offices that offer Agricultural Services, Commercial Services and Consular Services. The Defense Attaché office, Management Division, Political and Economic Affairs, Public Affairs, Middle East Partnership Initiative and Holidays offices are located in the United States Embassy building.
Being of assistance to United States citizens is another very important duty of the U.S. Embassy in Algeria. They are able to provide passport services, visa services and general information. Voters from abroad can also be assisted and matters such as adoption, emergencies, medical assistance, natural disasters, marriage and missing persons will be addressed by the embassy. The U.S. Embassy recommends that United States citizens do not carry their passport around with them at all times in case of theft or robbery. A copy of the passport should be kept on their person and is of great assistance when needing to re-issue a lost or stolen passport.
Travelers and United States residents in Algeria must be aware that they have to abide by and obey the laws and legal system of Algeria. It is therefore vital to contact the U.S. Embassy in Algeria to familiarize yourself with the laws of the country. The embassy is there to assist and address any queries or concerns.
