Algeria had been awarded the UN prize as a token of recognition for the unflagging efforts made by the Algerian state in favour of the population, be it, in the field of health in general or in the maternity hospitals in particular.

The United Nations took into account several factors, notably the significant drop of the death-rate in mother and child, before giving the prize to Algeria.
