December 7, 2009 -- From the 9th to the 14th of December, the Algerian capital will be hosting its first cultural festival of symphonic music. Throughout six days, the Algerian National Theatre Mahieddine Bachtarzi will vibrate to the majestic and elaborate notes of the universal classical music. At the time of a press conference, which took place at the National Higher Institute of Music, the responsible for the festival, Abdelkader Bouazzara, said that "the first edition, which takes as a theme: "Art, exchange and Rapprochement" is placed under the patronage of the Minister of Culture, Ms. Khalida Toumi". "Through this festival of symphonic music, the cultural authorities are attempting to confirm their interest in music generally and in symphonic music particularly." Throughout his intervention, Mr. Bouazzara detailed and highlighted the merits of classical music, not yet anchored in the musical tastes of Algerians. He spoke also about the long-standing efforts needed to establish a tradition. “The National Symphony Orchestra bent over backwards to present the symphonic music to music lovers who are accustomed to other genres”, he said.
The opening concert, which will take place next Wednesday, will be animated by the National Symphony Orchestra, made of 100 musicians, and 30 chorus-singers. About 12 countries will be taking part in this festival, notably Japan, France, Germany, Ukraine, Spain, and Korea. Conferences to discuss music will be held at the Mougari Boukhair room at the National Higher Institute of Music and will be animated by experts in musicology. Master-classes will also take place in the same room and this, throughout three consecutive days. The festival is an occasion to promote the Algerian traditional musical heritage, and endorse the work of the various orchestras which come from different backgrounds. The event will be also an occasion to pay homage to the national personalities who worked for the development and the progress of universal music in Algeria.
