Algeria’s average CPI inflation reached 2.5% in 2006, a slight acceleration from in 2005, the National Office Statistics announced Tuesday (January 16th). The acceleration was mainly induced by a significant increase in foodstuff prices, up 8.8% compared to 2005, especially fresh agricultural products, whose prices increased by 14.7%. Prices of industrial foodstuff rose more moderately, by 2.6%. In December, CPI inflation decelerated slightly to 4.4% down from 4.7% in November and 5.6% in October due to the amelioration of foodstuff prices, which were up by 7.2%.
