Singaporean business mission visiting Algeria

SINGAPORE : National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan will lead a construction business mission to Algeria from January 23 to 25.

This will be Singapore's first construction-focused business trip to Algeria.

Minister Mah will be accompanied by officials from the National Development Ministry, Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Housing and Development Board, National Parks Board, Urban Redevelopment Authority and International Enterprise Singapore.

The business mission, organised by BCA, comprises 13 senior executives from construction and real estate companies.

BCA says that during the trip, Mr Mah will call on Algeria's Minister for Land Planning and Environment and other Algerian ministers.

Mr Mah will also sign an MOU with the Ministry of Land Planning & Environment to cooperate in the fields of urban development and parks development.

SINGAPORE : Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan, who is in Algeria for a three-day trip, has inked a memorandum of understanding with the Algerian Ministry of Land Planning & Environment.

The two ministries have agreed to collaborate in the fields of urban and land planning, development of parks and protected areas, as well as sustainable development and the preservation of biological diversity.

Algeria is a fast growing economy that has embarked on a US$55 billion development plan - which includes the development of highways, rails, dams, desalination plants, and the construction of housing units.

Singapore says it is pleased to share its experiences and play a role in the development of Algeria.

Minister Mah says, "This memorandum of understanding...will serve as a catalyst to promote greater business collaborations among the private enterprises of both countries."

Separately, Minister Mah also hosted a business networking session in Algiers, Algeria.

The event was attended by more than 50 leading businessmen from the construction and real estate industry of both countries.

The bilateral trade between Singapore and Algeria totalled S$32 million for the first three quarters of last year.

This was almost double the figure over the same period in 2005.

jeudi 25 janvier 2007 - - Singapour compte intervenir dans le domaine du développement des villes nouvelles en Algérie et apporter son expérience à la politique de l’aménagement du territoire. Le mémorandum d’entente signé hier entre le ministre du Singapour, M. Mah Bow Tan, et M. Cherif Rahmani, ministre de l’Aménagement du territoire et de l’Environnement, fait ressortir cet intérêt de Singapour porté au développement des villes nouvelles.

Ce pays possède des expériences indiscutables sur le plan de l’aménagement du territoire. Cet accord touchant de multiples domaines porte sur huit volets ayant trait à l’aménagement du territoire, au développement durable, aux villes nouvelles, à l’aménagement des paysages et des espaces, au développement des aires protégées, à la préservation de la diversité biologique ainsi qu’à la planification et au développement des capacités des ressources humaines.

Dans un premier temps, les deux parties s’attelleront à mettre en place un dispositif d’échanges d’information, d’expériences et de savoir-faire. Les deux ministres ont également abordé le volet de la formation et des expertises techniques destinées à asseoir un encadrement adapté à toutes les actions qui seront entreprises.

Il a été également décidé la mise en œuvre et le suivi dudit mémorandum par l’installation d’un comité technique et scientifique chargé, notamment, de la coordination des actions. Saisissant cette opportunité, M. Cherif Rahmani a indiqué que cet accord vise en premier lieu à améliorer et à renforcer le rapport étroit qui existe entre les deux parties.

Le ministre de Singapour a, de son côté, estimé que l’Algérie, qui se trouve aux portes de l’Afrique et des pays arabes, possède de grandes potentialités économiques. Singapour reconnaît les capacités de l’Algérie et tient à renforcer sa position dans la région.
