Egypt's Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) will launch production at its new $18m steel plant in Algeria later this month. The plant, located in northeast Algeria, will provide a complete range of products, including structured steel products, pressure vessels, industrial tanks, and plate work primarily for industrial clients including the oil and gas industry and will generate 600 direct jobs. The Algerian plant is expected to have a 12,000-tonne capacity - boosting OCI’s steel fabrication capacity to approximately 67,000 tonnes annually, one of the largest in the region. Increased spending on infrastructure and industrial projects in North Africa are resulting in a strong demand for steel fabrication services. Moreover, Algeria has launched an $80 billion spending plan on infrastructure projects, which will lead to increasing demand for cement and steel.
