Algeria’s consumer price inflation slowed to 1.8% in January, compared to the same period in 2006, the latest figures from the National Statistical Office show. During the last quarter of 2006, inflation rose to 4.9%. The recent decline is attributed to a drop in food prices, which account for the largest part of the index. Food inflation has returned to the 2006 average and is likely to remain low in the coming months.
