As of May 20th, private transportation companies have increased their tariffs by 50%, Liberte reported Thursday (May 24th). The price increase, although expected, had been delayed for some time and was applied only after the legislative elections held on May 17th. The increase in transportation costs will have an upward impact on overall consumer price inflation (CPI), but due to government controls on fuel and electricity prices, the change is likely to be insignificant. CPI inflation remains low at 2.75% during the first quarter of 2007. Despite the increase, quality of transportation services has not seen marked improvement, Liberte reported.
