MADRID, September 3, 2007 (Thomson Financial) - Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas SA and Obrascon Huarte Lain SA are bidding for a new desalination plant tender in Algeria through their respective environmental units Aqualia and Inima, La Gaceta de los Negocios reported, citing unnamed sources at both constructors.
The mega project is seen worth some 3.4 billion euro over a 25-year concession, requiring an investment of some 500 million euro and producing 500,000 cubic metres of desalinated water per day, the newspaper noted.
The concession includes the design, financing, construction and management of the plant.
FCC and OHL are also bidding for three other desalination plants in Algeria, requiring a total investment of 250 million euro, it added, while noting that the results of the tenders will not be announced for several months.
Separately, La Gaceta reported that FCC and OHL plan to open an office in Dubai for their environmental units, with eyes on the $US9.5 billion investment in desalination plants planned by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates until 2015.
