Orascom Construction Industries lands Algerian contracts

CAIRO, October 9, 2007 (Market Wire) -- Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) has announced that its fully owned construction subsidiary OCI Algeria (OCIA) has been awarded two contracts from the Algerian Ministry of Housing to build the campus for the French international school and for a new law school. OCIA has also been awarded a contract to expand an existing tobacco factory in Algeria by STAEM, an Algerian-UAE tobacco company.

The contract for the new law school campus has a total value of US$ 47 million. The law school to be located in the capital city Algiers will have a capacity of 10,000 'student seats'. The project is expected to be completed during Q3 2009. The scope of works includes design and execution of all civil works and installation of campus infrastructure.

The contract for the new French international school is valued at US$ 18.4 million. The new school will also be located in the capital city of Algiers. The project is expected to be completed during Q4 2008. The contract has also been awarded to OCI Algeria on a turnkey basis including all civil works and the infrastructure for campus-wide audio-visual technology.

The third contract awarded by STAEM to expand their existing tobacco factory located in Koleaa, 30 km from Algiers, is valued at US$ 21 million. The project is expected to be completed during Q4 2008. OCI's scope of work includes all the civil, mechanical and electrical work.

Cement

OCI currently owns and operates a cement production plant in central Algeria through its wholly owned subsidiary Algerian Cement Company (ACC), with an annual cement production capacity of 5 million tonnes. OCI expects to commission a greenfield cement production plant through its wholly owned subsidiary Ciments Blanc d'Algerie (CIBA) in northwest Algeria with an annual cement production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of grey cement and 0.55 million tonnes of white cement during 2007.

Cement bags

Algerian Bag Company (ABC), a 100% owned subsidiary, ensures a consistent high quality supply of cement bags to its cement operations in Algeria. The ABC plant has an annual production capacity of 80 million cement bags.

Ready-mix concrete and aggregates

Through Algerian Concrete Technologies (ACT) and Samba, OCI is Algeria's largest aggregates and ready-mix concrete producer. ACT owns and operates a fleet of batch plants and mixer trucks which have a combined annual production capacity of 1.2 million cubic meters of read-mix concrete. ACT owns and operates aggregate quarries across Algeria with an annual production capacity of 2.8 million tonnes and reserves exceeding 60 million tonnes.

Mardi 9 octobre 2007 -- Après les télécoms, Orascom renforce ses positions dans les secteurs de la construction et du bâtiment en Algérie. En effet, le groupe égyptien, via sa filiale Orascom Construction Industries, annonce aujourd’hui avoir remporté trois nouveaux contrats pour un montant total de 85 millions.

Le premier, d’une valeur de 18,4 millions de dollars, concerne la construction de la nouvelle école française internationale d’Alger. Les travaux devraient s’achever au quatrième trimestre de l’année 2008. Le deuxième contrat, d’un montant de 47 millions de dollars, porte sur la construction d’une faculté de droit de 10.000 places à Alger, avec une livraison du projet prévue en 2009. Enfin, le troisième contrat a été remporté auprès de la société mixte de tabacs algéro-emirati (SATEM). D’une valeur de 21 millions d’euros, il concerne l’extension d’une usine de tabac situé à Koléa, à 30 kilomètres d’Alger.

Jeudi 11 octobre 2007 -- Orascom Constructions Industries (OCI) a décroché le gros lot en Algérie avec les nouveaux contrats de réalisation pour un montant de 89 millions de dollars.

Outre l’école internationale française, OCI sera chargée de la construction de la nouvelle faculté de droit et l’extension de l’usine de la Société des tabacs algéro-émiratie (STAEM), annonce ce groupe égyptien dans un communiqué rendu public mardi. La filiale algérienne d’OCI réalisera la nouvelle faculté de droit pour 47 millions de dollars. Cette infrastructure universitaire, située à Alger, aura une capacité d’accueil de 10 000 places pédagogiques. Elle sera réceptionnée le deuxième semestre 2009. OCI réalisera de bout en bout cette faculté de droit, de la conception à l’aménagement des différents départements.

Le contrat relatif à la réalisation de la nouvelle Ecole internationale française est quant à lui d’un montant de 18,4 millions de dollars. Sise à Alger, elle sera fin prête le dernier trimestre de 2008. Là aussi, OCI s’occupera de tous les aspects, y compris la fourniture d’équipements audio-visuel. OCI a conclu en outre un contrat avec la STAEM pour l’extension de son usine de tabac située à Koléa (30 km d’Alger) pour un montant de 21 millions de dollars. Les deux parties ont convenu de terminer les travaux à la fin de l’année prochaine.

Le programme de relance économique et le plan de consolidation de la croissance économique pour lesquels l’Etat algérien consacre près de 150 milliards de dollars représente donc une aubaine pour OCI qui a réussi à décrocher plusieurs contrats pour la réalisation d’infrastructures de base dans divers secteurs. Les investissements consentis par ce groupe et son engagement dans plusieurs projets laissent penser qu’OCI va s’installer dans la durée en Algérie.

D’ailleurs, l’un de ses responsables, Osama Bishai, soulignera que la « filiale de construction en Algérie tire bénéfice de l’infrastructure opérationnelle que nous avons établie au cours des huit dernières années qui inclut une main-d’œuvre de 5000 Algériens et Egyptiens, et inclut des investissements dans le béton armé, les agrégats et la production d’acier ». Il a indiqué dans ce sillage qu’OCI Algérie est sur plusieurs projets dans différents domaines dont les infrastructures de transport, l’énergie électrique, le dessalement de l’eau de mer, le ciment et les fertilisants.

Sa filiale Algerian Cement Company (ACC) a une capacité de production annuelle de 5 millions de tonnes de ciment. Son usine de production de ciment blanc sera opérationnelle d’ici la fin de cette année. Elle produira 2,5 millions de tonnes de ciment gris et 0,55 million de ciment blanc. Le groupe égyptien Orascom Construction Industries emploie 40 000 personnes à travers 20 pays.
