Apple Computer, maker of the iPod music player, just sold its 1 billionth song.
Since iTunes have only been available since late April, 2003, that's more than 11 songs per second for over two years and nine months. "I hope that every customer, artist and music company executive takes a moment to reflect on what we've achieved," CEO Steve Jobs said.
Apple, which made its name selling Macintosh computers, leads the market for legal downloads and broke into the top 10 list of U.S. music retailers for the first time last year when it ranked seventh, according to NPD Group. Revenue from the iPod and music sold through its iTunes store accounted for 60% of sales last quarter, up from 40% a year earlier.
"It reaffirms their position as the dominant player in the market and sends a message that there is strong consumer interest in purchasing downloadable music," Michael Gartenberg, director of research at Jupiter Research in New York, said.

Amazon and Microsoft are preparing counter attacks.
