Romeo & Giulietta in West Bank...

... win the prize for Best Live Action Short Film at the Academy Awards!

West Bank Story, this year's Oscar winner for best live action short film, takes the template of the Romeo and Juliet and applies it to the Israel-Palestine conflict, with two dueling falafel shops as backdrop.

The twist is that in West Bank Story, the star-crossed lovers are an Israeli soldier, David (Ben Newmark), stationed in a fictitious West Bank village and a young Palestinian woman, Fatima (Noureen DeWulf). The village is dominated by two competing humus joints - Kosher King, run by settlers, and The Humus Hut, where Fatima works with her brother.

Tensions mount when the Kosher King's new pastry machine juts onto Hummus Hut property. The Palestinians ruin the machine and the Israelis respond by building a wall between the two eating establishments.

At the end, the characters offer their own solution/hope to the Israeli/Arab conflict when the soldier suggests that if things don't work out for the lovers on the West Bank, they can go to a place where Jews and Muslims live in harmony: Beverly Hills.

Congratulations to the filmmakers, Ari Sandel [Listen ], Kim Ray, and the their team on their success.

Here’s a shortened list of their awards as listed on the film’s website:
    Total Festivals: 112
    Festivals Won: 25
Total Number of Countries Screened in 21, including: USA, Canada, China, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, UK, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Croatia, India, Poland, Denmark, Russia.
