(*) APE Files
If you have obtained an APE file, this is a Monkey's Audio file. Monkey's Audio is a lossless audio compression codec . Since it is lossless, there is no quality loss from the source audio once it is compressed. It achieves a compression rate of about 40%. It's main advantage over lossy compression formats such as MP3 is obvious, the quality of MP3 is not near as good. However, the files are much larger than simple MP3 files which is why MP3 files would be more available online than APE files.
How Do I Play APE Files?
You need to have a player that supports Monkey's Audio. Foobar2000 is an excellent advanced player for a lot of audio formats.
Another excelent player is the FREE JetAudio. Not only does it play various music and video files, it also has features such as CD burning, recording, and conversion to other file formats. You can create your own Internet broadcast by using JetCast and record analog audio to various formats. Tag editing for MP3, OGG, and WMA files; sound effects including wide, reverb, and x-bass; multichannel sound output; speed control of audio playback; cross-fading for a smooth transition between two songs; a skinnable user interface; and synchronized lyrics display (karaoke) for MIDI and MP3 files...
Burning APE files to CDs
Also if you are interested in burning these files to CD as Audio CDs, you can do that if you download a plugin for Nero Burning Rom from here.
(**) CUE Files
A CUE file is an ASCII (plain text) file that specifies how the tracks of a compact disc should be laid out.
For an audio CD, the cue sheet can specify titles and performers for the disc and its tracks as well as the names of one or more audio files to be used. MP3, WAV and BIN files are often used, although some programs support other formats. Cue sheets are especially useful when burning or listening to live sets where all tracks are recorded in one file... [wiki]
Split audio tracks files without burning to CDR or decode/re-encode any audio data:
CUE Splitter is a freeware tool that split a single big audio track, mostly an album or a compilation, into the relative individual audio tracks, using informations contained in the associated "CUE" file. Moreover audio files are automatically named using a user-defined "file mask" string, it's tags are filled with information extracted from "CUE" file and, optionally, an M3U playlist file can be generated.Last edited by piccolomondo; 12th January 2007 at 08:18.
