Sedo brokers sale of Russia.com for $1.5 million

November 26, 2009 -- According to a report on the Quintura.com blog, the domain name Russia.com was sold today for $1.5 million. The former owners NewMedia Holdings sold the domain through Sedo.com. The sale was also reported on Sedo’s home page today. The seller, NewMedia Holdings, also owns other country domains including Algeria.com, Morocco.com, PuertoRico.com, SouthAfrica.com, Scotland.com, and Ukraine.com. The company had also listed several of their domains including PuertoRico.com ($3.5 million) and Scotland.com ($3 million) at past Moniker auctions during Affiliate Summit and TRAFFIC in 2007.

Mystery buyer coughs up $1.5 million for Russia.com

November 26, 2009 -- The domain name Russia.com has been purchased by an undisclosed buyer for $1.5 million through marketplace Sedo, reports Yakov Sadchikov over on the Quintura blog. Currently an online guide for travelers who would like to visit the country, Russia.com is an operation of Paley Media, a Seattle, Washington-based consultancy firm that runs the show for many a country domain name, including Algeria.com, Scotland.com, Nepal.com and Ukraine.com. The domain names are themselves owned by NewMedia Holdings, a company that registered the domain name Russia.com back in 1995. It's unclear why NewMedia/Paley Media decided to offload the high-value domain name, but I reckon one million and a half dollars is a fair price for a website that currently attracts a mere 9,000 unique visitors per month according to Compete. On the other hand, Korea.com was sold earlier this year for a reported $5 million. We recently wrote about dominance of number of .com domains and also noted that .com domain registrations were starting to turn around again after a poor 2008. It looks like values of .com domains may be rising again: insurance broker Insure.com just sold its name and corresponding website for a whopping $16 million last month. Other large domain purchases this year include the sale of Candy.com for $3 million, Toys-R-Us' acquisition of Toys.com for $5.1 million, the sale of Fly.com to Travelzoo for $1.8 million, and the sale of Ad.com for $1.4 million.

Russia.com domain name sells for $1.5m

November 26, 2009 -- A Russian blog reported that an unknown buyer has purchased Russia.com through Sedo for $1.5 million. The whois record indicates that the transfer is in process, a good indicator that the money is in escrow and the deal will close. The company selling the domain is NewMedia Holdings, a big player in the country geo domain space who registered a number of good domains back in May of 1995. Some of those domains included:

AutoRacing.com
Birds.com
HorseRacing.com
Musicians.com
StockMarkets.com

In December of 2004 whois ownership changed from Virtual Countries, Inc to NewMedia Holdings, Inc. At the same time they changed ownership details on their website from Virtual Countries to Paley Media. Currently their websites indicate ownership by NewMedia Holdings and operations by Paley Media. NewMedia’s website mentions that Virtual Countries was founded by Gregory Paley in 1995 and is he is now chairman of NewMedia. In Sedo’s November newsletter e-mailed to customers and clients they announced two domains for sale by NewMedia Holdings: Airplanes.com and Birds.com. A quick search of NewMedia domains on Sedo showed that NewMedia may have put all their country domains for up sale this month. NewMedia opened their account with Sedo in January of this year. There is no indication why NewMedia is listing their domains for sale but with such a nice portfolio there may be more sales to come.

Права на домен, зарегистрированный в 1995 году, принадлежали компании NewMedia Holdings. По данным Compete, ежемесячно Russia.com посещает около 10 тысяч человек. Дальнейшая судьба ресурса не известна; скорее всего, здесь появится новый сайт. Заплаченная за Russia.com сумма может показаться высокой, однако она далека от рекордной. "В официальном заявлении неназванного покупателя говорится, что сумма, заплаченная за данное имя, достаточно велика, однако "доменное имя определенно стоит каждого заплаченного за него доллара", - пишут авторы интернет-издания.

Сейчас по адресу Russia.com содержится туристическая информация о России. В разделе "О нас" сказано, что сайт был создан в 1995 году, и его владельцем являлась расположенная в американском Сиэтле компания NewMedia Holdings. С 2004 года им управляла еще одна американская компания - Paley Media; по данным СМИ, она же поддерживает такие доменные имена, как Algeria.com, Scotland.com и Ukraine.com.

Представитель Sedo сказал bbcrussian.com, что 1,5 млн долларов – это одна из самых крупных сумм, когда-либо заплаченных за доменное имя. Одним из рекордсменов в этом смысле была продажа домена vodka.com – в конце 2006 года его купила за 3 млн долларов компания, выпускающая водку "Русский стандарт". Вместе с тем, по сообщению Sedo, условия наиболее крупных сделок на вторичном рынке доменов обычно не оглашаются. "Чем выше сумма, тем больше вероятность того, что покупатель останется неизвестным", говорит представитель Sedo.

Vendredi 27 Novembre 2009 -- Selon une information relayée par TechCrunch, le nom de domaine Russia.com a été vendu via la plate-forme spécialisée Sedo à un acheteur qui sous couvert d'anonymat a déboursé la somme de 1,5 million de dollars. Enregistré en 1995, Russia.com était jusqu'à présent la propriété de NewMedia Holdings et exploité par le groupe Paly Media pour fournir diverses informations touristiques. Paley Media s'occupe également d'autres sites comme Scotland.com, Ukraine.com, Algeria.com. Il s'agit de l'une des dernières grosses transactions dans le secteur du second marché des noms de domaine, même si cette année Korea.com a été vendu 5 millions de dollars. Les noms de pays en .com se vendent donc bien. Reste que Insure.com a lui été cédé par le courtier en assurances pour 16 millions de dollars le mois dernier. Dans son dernier rapport qui a souligné la bonne santé de l'extension .fr, l'AFNIC a rappelé qu'en 2006 le nom de domaine sex.com avait été vendu 14 millions de dollars.
