you can use Skype.
you can send sms, Talk, even have videoconfences.
the rule is simple, you can only do that with other people registered as Skype users..

SMS
Well, to send a SMS, your message obviously must somehow get into the Mobile Network.
This could be done by 2 means, from a mobile or from the net and in both cases it passes through what is called a SMSC (SMS Center).
It's some kind of server that forwards the message to the destination or saves it for later in case the destinator is not available.
From your mobile, you could write a message with the built in software, or you could write it using a software in your PC, connected to your gsm phone via a "serial" link.
The PC talks to the GSM modem (built in ur phone) using (usually) AT commands, and can send a message. This could be used to send alrerts to the admin whn the network is down for example,
and a pool of GSM modems with SIM cards is used, and will be charged normal SMS rates.
I don't think this is what you need unless you just want to have the option to write the SMSs from ur PC, and avoid the user unfriendly mobile Keyboard.
The second way, Using the internet, an "application" can talk direclty to the SMS center, and unfortunatly there is no real standard like with MMS (MM7 interface, or nokia EAIF) and it depends
on the brand of the SMSc the operator has. Some offer SMTP access, so u send an SMS using the same protocol to send e mails.
There are some companies that have deals with many operators, and make peoples life easier by providing a simple interface to all the SMScenter, and thus u can use a simple protocol to send
SMSs from your application worldwide. http://www.clickatell.com is an example, and you guessed right, you have to pay them per SMS.
In case, you dont wanna bother with the protocols, you can use smsnow mentioned mentioned before, wich offer you a simple windows application and a simple web interface by which you can send SMSs either using ur mobile (and smsnow will send the At commands to ur serial link)
or via a SMScenter where u just need to set up account info ( U can also get an account at clickatell and put the password/user name and start sending messages.)
In case you just want a simple solution, u can send SMSs to Dz by using web sites like http://www.poolpy.com, but u need to buy cards that sell for 300 DAs for 20 SMSs I think.
I don't really wanna mention them because it's an algerian company EEPAD, that are taking the Voip market by bypassing the laws (that are imposed on ppl like us) and partenering with Algerie Telecom.
Anyway, if you just want free SMS, I am afraid there is no real solution, I have never tried such websites, but I am sure that publicity can not pay off (we r not in the 90's internet boom), so u r limitted
so a very small trial number. U can test ICQ (best IM/chat application like messneger back in 98) they had free SMS worldwide I think, but of course u need to have an account.
I am not sure however about if they support Dz!

salam
i don't know how u guys enjoy the sms!! i personnaly don't like it at all, i prefer to talk on the phone or just send an e-mail. it's such a pain in the ass trying to read on this 2 inch square lcd screen and it's even harder to
write a message with these tiny bttons of the cell phone!!!
i see alot of people love the camera phones while they could buy a 3.2MP kodak degital camera for a better price!!
