Salaamu aleikoum
Mouloud Nabaoui is right around the corner, as I have started seeing them selling candles, fireworks and insence in the markets already. I don't personally celebrate this holiday or tradition ... neither did my husband or his mother ... but most of our ILs do.
The feast of Mouloud Ennabaoui Ech-Cherif is the feast in which the Muslim world celebrates the birth of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) (b. 570). The celebration of the birth of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) was not known at the beginning of Muslim history. It seems it was instituted in the eleventh century in Egypt, according to some historians. And many see it an "innovation" (bidah).
But the Muslims that do celebrate it do with piety and religious fervor. They are celebrating with processions, lectures and stories about the life of the Prophet (PBUH). In Algeria, it is considered a big party and fireworks. Firecrackers are mixed with the joy of the neighborhood children, while mothers make great preparations for various traditional dishes using semolina. In each region, its food and its own pace, around Alger popular is rechta, in the South East and east is "chekhchoukha biskra " to the West RGAGS also known as Trida (sheets of pasta topped with white sauce) in other regions, a couscous dish called Ftawers (also known as Mechroub) made from fermented black couscous according that regions preparations which is very diverse and varied. Also not to mention the traditional sweets Tamina or Rfiss.
There are some religious gatherings mixed with the rhythm of folk entertainment called "Baroud and karkabou" iin Ksours, neighboringBeni Abbes located 245 km south of Bechar. The festivities will last and religious, as is tradition, about ten days.
Other traditions ...
- reciting the Qur'ran (many reciting competitions are organized "Tajweed" - correct prounoucation of the Quran) and it focuses on the life of our Prophet p(peace be upon him)
- Mosques and doctor's offices are full and parents to take this opportunity to circumcise their boys.
- At night they light candles for each member of the family, mothers put henna on those who wish to sing "Zad Anabi frahna bih wa" (the prophet was born and we're thrilled).
