November 30, 2007 -- An al-Qaeda leader who visited Australia on a lecture tour in the late 1990s was involved in a plot to attack a US military base on Australian soil, according to secret documents made public for the first time this week.

An Algerian terrorist known as Abu Sheema and his associates allegedly revealed their plans to the former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib when he was in Afghanistan just weeks before the September 11 attacks.

Mr Habib revealed his knowledge of the alleged plot in a number of interviews with US officials after his arrest in Pakistan in October 2001.

Questioned by ASIO agents during his detention at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba in 2002, Mr Habib said Abu Sheema had recruited people to go to Australia to carry out the operation and that Abu Sheema's offsiders had also asked him to smuggle dangerous chemicals into Australia but he had refused.

He said Abu Sheema's men claimed they had sleeper agents in Australia ready to act and had talked about having a "switch" in Australia, something he thought related to missile control systems.

In the interview, Mr Habib told the agents: "These people said if anything happens from America to Afghanistan, they have people with connection in Australia. They gunna do something."

He claimed Abu Sheema's associates - known as Abu Ibrahim and Abu Yusef - had talked to him about their plans to launch a strike on a US facility somewhere in Australia. Mr Habib said he could not recall where the targeted base was, but he thought it was either in Perth, Darwin or Brisbane.

There are no US military bases in the three cities, although there could be smaller facilities with some US military staff.

Mr Habib said he could not remember if the biggest US base in Australia, Pine Gap near Alice Springs, had been targeted.

The interview was made public for the first time during Mr Habib's defamation action against Nationwide News in the NSW Supreme Court.

Judge Peter McClellan is hearing evidence on defences and damages in Mr Habib's case after a jury found that an opinion article in Sydney's The Daily Telegraph by columnist Piers Akerman defamed Mr Habib by implying he made false claims.

Mr Habib was arrested in Pakistan in early October 2001 on suspicion of terrorism offences as he was attempting to make his way back to Australia.

He told the court he was regularly beaten, tortured and drugged during three years in detention in Pakistan, Egypt and Guantanamo Bay. Mr Habib was released in January 2005 and returned to Australia without being charged.

Mr Habib also told ASIO he had met Abu Sheema in a house in Kabul, Afghanistan, and he had recognised his face from the streets of Lakemba in Sydney's west. But he said that at the time he was in Australia, Abu Sheema was known by another name.

He described Abu Sheema as being tall with curly hair, a thin face, black eyes and a short beard. He said he was about 27 years old and spoke good English and French and had told Mr Habib he had travelled in and out of Britain many times. When he saw Abu Sheema in Lakemba, he was in the company of a lot of young men and Mr Habib said he might have met people from the Islamic Youth Movement.

Mr Habib said Abu Sheema had delivered lectures at a Lakemba mosque and with an associated mosque in Brisbane, and Abu Sheema had told him that he knew a lot of people in Brisbane and Sydney. When they met in Kabul, Abu Sheema had asked him about getting refugees into Australia and stated that immigration in Brisbane appeared to be easier than in other capital cities.

Mr Habib said he told Abu Sheema that Australia was no longer accepting refugees.

The interviews also revealed that Mr Habib had seen David Hicks, who was known as Abu Muslim, in Pakistan before he travelled to Afghanistan looking for somewhere to relocate his family and to set up a gemstone dealing business.

'Terrorist attack' planned on Aussie U.S. base

Jeudi 29 novembre 2007 -- Ayant appartenu à un groupe armé, A. S a été condamné par le tribunal criminel de la cour de Jijel à vingt ans de réclusion criminelle pour adhésion à un groupe terroriste, meurtre avec préméditation, tentative de meurtre avec préméditation, vols avec port d'armes et destruction de biens publics et privés au moyen d'explosifs, en rapport avec le terrorisme. Après avoir rejoint le maquis en 1996, l'accusé a déclaré qu'il a été blessé au niveau du poumon en 1999 et depuis il était devenu invalide. A la barre, il a nié les faits qui lui sont reprochés dans l'arrêt de renvoi au motif qu'il était, à l'époque des faits, blessé. L'avocat de la défense qui a demandé l'acquittement de son client pour le simple fait que ce dernier a déjà été condamné à deux reprises pour adhésion à un groupe terroriste armé et qu'à l'époque des faits rapportés dans l'arrêt de renvoi, son mandant était paralysé par la foi d'un certificat médical attestant son handicap. Dans son réquisitoire, le représentant du ministère public a requis la peine capitale pour l'accusé qui a été condamné par le jury du tribunal criminel, à l'issue de ses délibérations, à vingt ans de réclusion criminelle.

Par ailleurs, un autre individu, D.A a été condamné à douze ans de réclusion criminelle lors d'une autre affaire jugée la même journée, par le même tribunal criminel, dans sa troisième session qui se tient à la cour de Jijel depuis le 10 novembre dernier. Le jury de cette cour a prononcé cette condamnation à l'encontre de cet individu pour son implication dans des affaires de terrorisme, dans le commerce illégal d'armes et de munitions et pour possession d'armes sans autorisation. Quatre autres individus, en l'occurrence, N.N, L.A, A.D et B.A, impliqués dans cette même affaire ont été condamnés par contumace par la même juridiction à vingt ans de réclusion criminelle, pour adhésion à un groupe armé, commerce illégal d'armes et de munitions. Sept autres personnes jugées dans cette même affaire ont été acquittées par le jury du tribunal criminel.

Jijel : Six terroristes condamnés

Jeudi 29 Novembre 2007 -- Les éléments de la brigade criminelle de la police judiciaire de la Sûreté de wilaya d’Oum El Bouaghi viennent de traiter deux affaires liées à un meurtre avec préméditation et l’ouverture d’un lieu de débauche. Selon notre source, 10 personnes sont impliquées dans ces deux affaires. Il s’agit des dénommés A. T., 29 ans, et M. A. N, 33 ans, résidant tous les deux à Ben M’hidi wilaya d’El Tarf, B. A., 16 ans, M. K., 21 ans, B. H., 36 ans, S. A., 17 ans K. F., 25 ans, B. F., 23 ans, F. S., 41 ans, habitant tous à Oum El Bouaghi et G. S, 23 ans, résidant à Souk Naâmane.

Les faits du crime remonte à la matinée de samedi dernier, lors d’une rixe entre deux familles à la cité Larbi-Ben-M’hidi dans laquelle ont été utilisées des armes blanches. La victime H. Y., 29 ans, a été poignardée au niveau du ventre et a rendu l’âme durant la même journée à l’hôpital d’Oum El Bouaghi. La cause de ce meurtre est la mésentance permanente entre les dénommées B. H., une femme divorcée, et S. A., coiffeuse, pour des affaires de débauche, selon la cellule de communication de la Sûreté de wilaya.

Présentés, avant-hier, devant le procureur de la République près le tribunal d’Oum El Bouaghi, B. A., A. T. et M. A. N. ont été écroués alors que le reste des mis en cause ont bénéficié d’une citation directe. Parallèlement à ce crime, B. M., G. S., K. F. et B. F. ont eu à répondre devant le magistrat instructeur sur les faits qui leur sont reprochés, à savoir l’ouverture d’un lieu de prostitution et incitation d’une mineur à la débauche. Ainsi ils ont été placés sous contrôle judiciaire.

November 30, 2007 -- The appeals court in Salé sentenced terror suspect Chafik Madrassi, who was recently extradited to Algeria, to a 30-year prison term for murder, formation of a criminal gang, and belonging to a banned religious group, local press reported on Thursday (November 29th). The prosecution said Madrassi was a member of the radical group "Assirat al-Moutakim", formerly led by Miloudi Zakaria, who died in November 2006 in a Kenitra prison while serving a life sentence.

Also Thursday, three minors allegedly linked to Abdelfettah and Ayoub Raydi, the two brothers who blew themselves up in March and April in Casablanca, appeared before the same appeals court. Their hearing was postponed to January 3rd based on a request by the defence. Earlier this week, the same court postponed the trial of 51 terror suspects, including one woman, to December 6th.

Samedi 1 Décembre 2007 -- Une secousse tellurique d'une magnitude de 3,6 degrés sur l'échelle de Richter a eu lieu hier à 9h44 (heure locale) dans la wilaya de Constantine, indique le Centre de recherche en astronomie, astrophysique et géophysique (Craag) dans un communiqué. L'épicentre de cette secousse a été localisé à 9 km au sud-est de la ville d'Aïn Kerma, précise le Craag.
