Lutte antiterroriste : l’Algérie pour une collaboration honnête, sans ingérence

Mercredi 30 janvier 2008 -- Le ministre de l'Intérieur Yazid Zerhouni a affirmé mercredi la nécessité d'une collaboration internationale «efficace et honnête» contre le terrorisme et exclut l'ingérence dans les affaires intérieures des Etats.

"Le combat contre le terrorisme exige une collaboration internationale concrète, efficace et honnête", a-t-il déclaré à une réunion du Conseil des ministres arabes de l'Intérieur. La lutte antiterroriste "exige une volonté politique sincère" et "doit être conduite dans la transparence et le respect de la souveraineté des Etats, et de la dignité des peuples, sans ingérence dans leurs affaires intérieures", a-t-il ajouté dans un discours.

Affirmant que le terrorisme "n'est pas l'affaire d'une région, d'une religion ou d'une culture particulières", il a souligné que l'Algérie "est déterminée à lutter sans relâche" contre les groupes armés qui "tentent de torpiller le processus de réconciliation et replonger le pays dans le chaos".

M. Zerhouni a assuré qu'en dépit des attentats perpétrés en 2007, l'Algérie a tourné la page de "la décennie noire" du terrorisme, "grâce à la politique de réconciliation initié par le président Abdelaziz Bouteflika". "La réconciliation est un choix irréversible pour consolider la paix et la stabilité" en Algérie, a-t-il affirmé, accusant, sans les nommer "certaines parties", qui "cherchent à maintenir l'Algérie dans le cycle de la violence".

Au plan arabe, le ministre algérien a plaidé la collaboration et l'échange rapide de données entre les services de sécurité concernant le contrôle des frontières, les filières, les sources de financement et le trafic d'armes et de stupéfiants.

Maghreb leaders highlight need for coherent Arab policy against terrorism

January 31, 2008 -- Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali opened the Arab Interior Ministers' Council in Tunis on Wednesday (January 30th) with an appeal to participants to address terrorism through improved co-ordination, local and international press reported. The meeting gathers ministers and security officials from 17 Arab countries, several pan-Arab security organisations and Interpol. The Tunisian president called for stepped up efforts to limit the movement of terrorists from one country to another and to halt their sources of financing. Ben Ali also reiterated his proposal of an "international code of conduct" against extremism under the auspices of the UN.

Also speaking during the first day of the forum, Algerian Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni highlighted the role of the educational, religious, cultural and informational sectors in the fight against terrorism and organised crime. He also pressed for a coherent Arab policy against the phenomenon.

Mauritania gunmen target embassy

February 1, 2008 -- Unidentified gunmen have opened fire on the Israeli embassy in Mauritania, witnesses and officials have said.

Six men traded fire with embassy guards before shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) as they fled the scene, the Associated Press reports.

Some people were wounded, police and emergency services told Reuters.

On Christmas Eve four French tourists were killed while picnicking in Mauritania. The government blamed the incident on Islamist militants.

Israel's ambassador to Mauritania, Boaz Bismuth, said that no embassy staff had been hurt in Friday's shooting.

"At 0220 this morning, there was shooting at the Israeli embassy in Nouakchott. All the embassy staff, Israeli and Mauritanian, are safe," he told Reuters.

"I have received many phone calls from Mauritanian friends who are very concerned. That is the only positive thing in a very sad night," he said.

Mauritania is one of the few Arab League countries that has diplomatic relations with Israel.

At least nine people were arrested in Mauritania in connection with the attack on the French tourists, which occurred in Aleg, about 250km (160 miles) east of the capital, Nouakchott.

Prosecutors said they were thought to belong to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb - an Algeria-based group formerly known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat.

Authorities in the west African country of Guinea-Bissau later said that they had arrested five more Mauritanians over the killings.

The attack - a rare event in the south of Mauritania - led the French organisers of the Lisbon-Dakar Rally to cancel the event due to security concerns.

Report: Magnitude 5.2 earthquake hits Algerian town

ALGIERS, February 1, 2008: An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 hit northern Algeria on Friday, in the same region that saw a major deadly quake in 2003, the state APS news agency reported. Initial reports said three people were injured.

Friday's earthquake hit 8 kilometers (5 miles) northeast of the town of Boumerdes at 8:33 a.m. (0733 GMT), APS cited the Algerian Research Center for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics in Algiers as saying in a statement.

The civil protection agency said three people were lightly injured and no damages were reported, APS reported.

The quake prompted brief panic among residents of nearby towns and villages, APS said.

The Boumerdes region, just east of the capital, Algiers, sees frequent seismic activity. In May 2003, an earthquake there killed more than 2,200 people and injured at least 10,000.

Tremblement de terre de 5,2 degrés à Boumerdès

Vendredi 1 Février 2008 -- Une secousse tellurique d'une magnitude de 5,2 degrés sur l'échelle de Richter a été enregistrée vendredi à 07H33 GMT dans la wilaya de Boumerdes, a annoncé le Centre algérien de recherche en astronomie astrophysique et géophysique (CRAAG). L'épicentre de ce tremblement a été localisé à 8 km au nord-est de Boumerdès, a précisé le CRAAG dans un communiqué, sans signaler de victimes.

La région de Boumerdes connaît une intense activité sismique. Elle avait été secouée le 21 mai 2003 par un séisme qui avait fait près de 2.300 morts et plus de 11.000 blessés, selon un bilan officiel.

Trois blessés légers dans le tremblement de terre de Boumerdès

Vendredi 1 Février 2008 -- Trois personnes ont été légèrement blessées à la suite de la secousse tellurique enregistrée vendredi dans le département de Boumerdès, a annoncé la protection civile. Cette secousse d'une magnitude de 5,2 degrés sur l'échelle de Richter, selon le Centre algérien de recherche en astronomie astrophysique et géophysique (CRAAG), n'a pas provoqué de dégâts matériels, a précisé la même source.

Son épicentre a été localisé à 8 km au nord-est de Boumerdès, une zone sans constructions. Elle a été précédée par une première secousse ressentie à Alger, dont la magnitude et l'épicentre n'ont pas été indiqués. Un début de panique a été constaté parmi la population de Boumerdes, qui s'est rapidement ressaisie, ont indiqué des témoins.
