Algiers, December 24, 2009 – The Palestinian Legislative Council's (PLC) delegation from Gaza met with UN Secretary General's representative Lakhdar al-Ibrahimi in the Algerian capital. MPs Ismail Al-Ashkar and Mushir Al-Masri discussed with Ibrahimi inter-Palestinian reconciliation and the siege on Gaza Strip. PLC member Ismail al-Ashkar explained to al-Ibrahimi the Hamas movement's position regarding inter-Palestinian reconciliation stressing the urgency of national unity to confront the Zionist threat, while Mushir al-Masri called for an international campaign to expose Israel's ongoing violations of legality and to lift the Mideast Quartet's conditions for talks with Hamas. Lakhdar al-Ibrahimi, for his part, agreed to the importance of a widespread campaign to end the siege on the Strip and called for direct talks between Fatah and Hamas aimed at bridging the divide.

ALGIERS, December 24, 2009 (KUNA) -- On Thursday Algeria ruled out imminent prospects of reaching detente in relations with Egypt over the recent soccer-related tension. Abdel Aziz Belkhadem, the Minister of State and Personal Envoy of the President, said at a news conference that conciliation between the presidents of the two countries, Hosni Mubarak and Abdel Aziz Bouteflika, was not expected in the near future. Algeria remained adamant in its demand that Cairo punish all the Egyptian figures who had assailed the Algerian national and patriotic symbols and the martyrs. "Algeria will not forget the harm that had been inflicted on the dignity of the martyrs," he said, "and we will not stop calling for punishing those who insulted the Algerian people." Algerian-Egyptian ties have deteriorated since November 12, when a bus boarding Algerian soccer players were reportedly attacked in Cairo. Later, fans of the two soccer teams engaged in scuffles in the Sudanese capital after a game. Cairo says that Algerian activists attacked the Egyptian soccer fans in Khartoum with rods and metallic objects.
