Algerian president hosts Raul Castro

ALGIERS, February 8, 2009 (AFP) — Cuban President Raul Castro held talks on Sunday in Algiers with his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the APS news agency reported.

The two leaders were aiming to reinforce bilateral ties and also planned to discuss regional and international questions of common interest, the Algerian presidency said.

Quoted by APS, the Cuban president hailed the "important" links between the two countries.

"Algerian-Cuban relations have always been clear and honest," Castro said, "(They) have not just been maintained, but have been strengthened over time."

Castro, who arrived in Algiers on Saturday for his first official visit there as Cuban leader, visited a memorial marking Algeria's 1954-1962 war of independence from France.

He also inspected the presidential guard.

Castro had previously been in Russia and Angola before flying to Algiers for a three-day visit.

Algeria and Cuba established ties in 1962. The two countries signed a number of cooperation agreements in 2005 covering areas such as health, sports, fisheries and culture.

Castro's ailing elder brother Fidel visited Algiers seven times as leader, and Bouteflika also visited Havana in 2006 - shortly after the younger Castro took over the presidency.

Cuban volunteers also serve in Algeria, mostly in the health field, and Cuba manages several eye clinics in the north African country with more in the works.

Earlier this month, an Algerian pharmaceutical company also struck a deal with a Cuban counterpart to produce locally a vaccine against Hepatitis B.

Perpétuité pour deux islamistes armés accusés d’enlèvement à Tizi-Ouzou

Dimanche 8 Février 2009 -- Deux islamistes armés, accusés d'avoir kidnappé le fils d'un commerçant à Maatkaas, dans la wilya de Tizi-Ouzou, ont été condamnés, dimanche 8 février, par contumace à perpétuité par le tribunal criminel de Tizi-Ouzou, a appris TSA (tsa-algerie.com) de source judiciaire. Les deux mis en cause, Benari Abderhmane et Keddour Hamid, actuellement en fuite, ont été reconnus par leur victime sur de documents et de photos fournis par la police.

La victime, dont l'identité n'a pas été révélée, a été séquestrée pendant 12 jours, entre le 14 et le 26 février 2008. Elle a été libérée après le paiement par ses proches d'une rançon de 5 millions de dinars au groupe terroriste responsable de l'enlèvement. Les ravisseurs avaient initialement demandé 30 millions de dinars.

C'est le second procès d'enlèvement jugé par le tribunal criminel de Tizi-Ouzou depuis 2008. Depuis la fin 2005, plus d'une trentaine de personnes ont été victimes d'enlèvements suivis de demandes rançons à Tizi-Ouzou, selon les statistiques des services de sécurité. Régulièrement attribués à des groupes armés, ces enlèvements seraient aussi l'œuvre de groupes de grand banditisme.

L'Algérie participe au financement d'une grande mosquée à Marseille

Dimanche 8 Février 2009 -- L'Algérie participe au financement de la future grande mosquée de Marseille, dans le sud-est de la France, a déclaré dimanche le ministre de la Solidarité nationale, Djamal Ould Abbas, sans préciser le montant de la contribution. «On se fait un point d'honneur à construire la plus grande mosquée de France», a dit Djamal Ould Abbas, en recevant le président du conseil général des Bouches-du-Rhône (sud-est de la France), Jean-Noël Guérini, en voyage officiel en Algérie. "Je me suis engagé pour que la grande mosquée de Marseille soit édifiée dans les meilleurs délais", a répondu Jean-Noël Guérini.

L'Algérie a versé en septembre "un chèque de 170.000 euros" pour la construction de la mosquée de Marseille, ville où vit une forte communauté algérienne, a précisé à l'AFP Fatima Orsatelli, qui siège au conseil d'administration du Conseil régional du culte musulman de la région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (sud-est de la France) et qui accompagne Jean-Noël Guérini en Algérie. Elle a ajouté que l'Algérie était à l'heure actuelle le seul donateur et qu'un "appel aux dons" était en préparation.

La mairie de Marseille a remis en novembre 2007 à l'association chargée du projet de grande mosquée les clefs du bâtiment qui doit l'abriter. Le budget de la grande mosquée avait alors été évalué entre 8 et 8,6 millions d'euros. Ce projet, dans les cartons depuis des années, revêt un caractère symbolique à Marseille où vit une importante communauté musulmane estimée habituellement à quelque 200.000 personnes.

Mauritania to renew one-third of Senate in May

February 8, 2009 -- Mauritania will hold elections in 17 districts for one-third of the Senate on May 3rd, AMI quoted a government source as saying on Saturday (February7th). This partial election is to be held every two years.The senate consists of 56 senators, the majority of which support the military junta that ousted President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi during the August 6th, 2008 coup. The electoral campaign is scheduled for April 17th-May 2nd. The anti-coup National Front for the Defence of Democracy (FNDD) has not yet announced whether its members will participate in the elections for the Senate.

Mauritania's Atar region on high alert over terrorists' presence

February 8, 2009 -- Atar, Mauritania's 3rd military region, is on high alert, local press reported on Sunday (February 8th). Two suspicious cars with armed men on board, allegedly belonging to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, were noticed in Ouadane. The men reportedly asked nomads in the region about the location of medical establishments and Western nationals. Mauritanian security forces launched a search operation by land and by air.

Algerian, Cuban presidents talk energy cooperation

ALGIERS, February 8, 2009: Cuban President Raul Castro says energy-related projects topped the agenda of his talks with Algerian leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Sunday's meeting in the Algerian capital, Algiers, was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. Bouteflika described ties between the two countries as "clear" and said they had grown stronger over time.

Castro said the two countries have "many points in common" on international issues.

Castro arrived in the oil-rich North African nation Saturday after a visit to Angola, where he met with President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos. In a joint statement Saturday, Castro and Dos Santos called for a new economic order and the end of long-standing U.S. sanctions against Cuba.
