Bethlehem, February 19, 2009 (PNN) – The British convoy en route to the Gaza Strip passed last night into the Moroccan capital city of Rabat and stopped in Fez.

After over-landing through Europe this was the first entrance to Africa as the 130-truck convoy nears Gaza.

Hoping to enter through the Rafah border crossing, organizers of the humanitarian mission are addressing the needs created by three weeks of major attacks and an ongoing siege.

The convoy left London over the weekend and measures over a mile long as the largest British endeavor of its kind.

Ambulances are heading the convoy that started out again early this morning passing through Fez and onward to Algeria where the border has been opened. Tunisia is the expected arrival point for Saturday before the convoy passes through to Libya and then into Egypt.

Organizer Rami Abdo called for widespread Arab participation in breaking the blockade on the Gaza Strip including facilitating movement through Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. He asked that the convoy be welcomed and provided with the necessary supplies, he said, adding that the “group faces risks and hardships on the road in its rejection of the siege on Gaza and deserves to be welcomed them wherever they pass through Arab lands.”

February 21, 2009 -- A group of volunteers from Gloucestershire are now a week and more than 2,500 miles into their trip to deliver aid to Gaza. Three vans from the county left London’s Hyde Park last Saturday as part of the national Viva Palestina convoy, organised and led by MP George Galloway.

The 110-vehicle convoy, which is believed to be more than a mile long, was in the city of Fez in Morocco on Thursday morning, and is due to arrive in Annaba in Algeria by the end of today.

The Gloucester2Gaza team started out from the Friendship Café in Barton Street, Gloucester, before joining vans from across England on February 14. Imran Atcha, from the café, said: “I’ve been speaking to them on the phone and they’re doing fine. They have had a big official welcome in France and in Spain, and they had a police escort when they got to Morocco. They say there are people lining the streets cheering them on, so they’re really pleased.”

From Algeria, the convoy of trucks, lorries, ambulances and other vehicles will travel through Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. They are aiming to reach Rafah, on the Gaza border with Egypt, by March 3.

Imran said: “It’s a great honour to be associated with the convoy. Those who have gone feel very honoured. Lots of them have sacrificed their time, and there’s been so much generosity in the donations from Gloucester businesses and people. It’s a very constructive way of showing our support for Gaza.”

The Gloucester team are travelling in three vans, which have all been painted in bright colours and adorned with the Gloucester2Gaza logo. Among the items they are taking are 30 wheelchairs and 1,000 blankets, as well as crutches and clothes for children.

The official website of the campaign, Viva Palestina - a lifeline from Britain to Gaza, has regular updates on the convoy’s progress. It also includes videos, photos and blogs from members of the convoy, which are updated regularly.

Respect Party MP George Galloway launched the campaign after Israel’s 19-month blockade of the Gaza strip broke out into violence between the country and Palestinian governing organisation Hamas.

The conflict lasted more than three weeks, and left more than 1,300 dead, including women and children. Protests were seen throughout the world calling for an immediate cease-fire. Following the cease-fire in January, a desperate call for aid was made, resulting in major campaigns launched by charities and individuals across the UK.

February 21, 2009 -- The Respect MP George Galloway has called for an investigation after police stopped a convoy taking aid, toys and medical supplies to Gaza and arrested nine people under anti-terror laws.

All nine men arrested on the M65 near Preston last Friday have been released without charge, but the organisers of the Viva Palestina convoy, which is headed by Galloway, said that aid donations dropped by 80% after news of the arrests.

Police stopped three vehicles and arrested six men from Blackburn and three from Burnley under the Terrorism Act. The 100-vehicle convoy left without them and is now in Morocco.

"Nine innocent people were prevented by the police from joining our convoy," said Galloway. "The timing of the operation is seen locally as an attempt to smear and intimidate the Muslim community, and I must say they seem to be right. Photographs of the high-profile snatch were immediately fed to the press to maximise the newsworthiness of the smear."

Galloway said he was writing to the chief constable of Lancashire and the home secretary asking for an explanation.

Lancashire police said yesterday that they had helped the Blackburn men financially so that they could catch up with the convoy. In an open letter to the local community, the police said: "Investigations of this kind are very difficult and complex and we appreciate the sensitivities that surround them for all concerned."

Chris Chilvers, a convoy organiser, said yesterday that the men arrested had been questioned about the funding of the convoy as sums of cash had been found.

"There was cash around because none of the main banks would allow us to open an account," he said.
