GAINESVILLE, Florida, September 9, 2010 -- A Muslim leader had an audience with the leader of the Dove World Outreach Center today to discuss stopping a planned Qur'an burn slated for this weekend at the church. The Rev. Terry Jones, the pastor who has scheduled "Burn a Qur'an Day" for Saturday at the Gainesville church, was not accessible to media via phone, email, fax or the doorbell, but he met with Imam Muhammad Musri from the Islamic Society of Central Florida in Orlando. Muhammad described Jones as "very cordial." Today was the second day of meetings between the two, and Musri today said he proposed a deal. "He has mentioned, indirectly, that if the mosque was relocated, he would put the project (Qur'an burning) on hold," Musri said. The mosque to which he referred is the proposed mosque near Ground Zero in New York, the site of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. No deal has yet been brokered, but Musri said he has contacted an imam in New York to propose the dual cancellation. The New York mosque has not confirmed this.
The remainder of the scene surrounding Dove World is based on security. FBI agents were there today, and crews have erected what appears to be security cameras just off the property. Police have set up checkpoints for anyone entering the neighborhood surrounding the church. Also just off the property, some people were shouting and others were holding signs, but all were against the idea to burn about 200 Qur'ans Saturday. One other group showed up to speak with the pastor, but was turned away. "Pastor Jones' representative said Jones was praying and could not be disturbed; we respect that," said Wayne Harvey with the Santa Fe Baptist Association in Gainesville, a group representing about 50 churches.

September 9, 2010 -- The pastor of a small U.S. church who wanted to burn copies of the Qur'an has cancelled his protest. Terry Jones said he was calling off the Florida event after the group behind a planned mosque close to Ground Zero in New York agreed to relocate it. Mr Jones had said the burning would be a stand against terrorism, but his plan was internationally condemned. President Barack Obama had warned Mr Jones the event would be "a recruitment bonanza" for al-Qaeda.

GAINESVILLE, Florida, September 9, 2010 — A Florida imam says that no deal has been reached to move the site of a mosque at the site of ground zero in exchange for a Florida minister to call off plans to burn Qur'ans. Imam Muhammad Musri tells The Associated Press that what he offered was a meeting among the Rev. Terry Jones, the New York imam planning the Islamic center and himself to talk about the mosque location. Musri is president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida. He says he told Jones that he does not believe the mosque should not be there and would do everything in his power to make sure it is moved. Jones says he believes a deal was reached to move the mosque and would fly to New York Saturday to discuss it.

GAINESVILLE, Florida, September 9, 2010 (AP) — The minister of a Florida church said he has canceled plans to burn copies of the Qur'an because the leader of a much-opposed plan to build an Islamic Center near ground zero has agreed to move its location. The agreement couldn't be immediately confirmed. The Rev. Terry Jones said Thursday that Americans oppose the mosque being built at the location and that Muslims do not want the Qur'an burned. He said instead of his plan to burn the books on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of 9/11, he will be flying to New York to speak to Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf about moving the mosque. "We are, of course, now against any other group burning Qur'ans," Jones said during a news conference. We would right now ask no one to burn Qur'ans. We are absolutely strong on that. It is not the time to do it."
President Barack Obama, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan and several Christian leaders had urged Jones to reconsider his plans to burn the Qur'an, Islam's holiest text that Muslims consider sacred. They said his actions would endanger U.S. soldiers and provide a strong recruitment tool for Islamic extremists. Jones' protest also drew criticism from religious and political leaders from across the Muslim world.
Jones said Imam Muhammad Musri of the Islamic Society of Central Florida told him that officials would guarantee that the mosque would be moved. "I asked him three times, and I have witnesses," Jones said. "If it's not moved, then I think Islam is a very poor example of religion. I think that would be very pitiful. I do not expect that." Musri thanked Jones and his church members "for making the decision today to defuse the situation and bring to a positive end what has become the world over a spectacle that no one would benefit from except extremists and terrorists" who would use it to recruit future radicals.
