Algerian court sentences three drug traffickers to life imprisonment

ALGIERS, April 3, 2011 (KUNA) -- A criminal court in the city of Oran, western Algeria, sentenced three drug traffickers to life imprisonment on Sunday. The case dates back to August 2009, when police raided a private home in Al-Sediqiah district, eastern Oran city, and founded 1,100 Kgs of cannabis. The preliminary investigations led to the arrest of the three suspects pending investigations. After completing their work, the investigators revealed a cross-border dimension to the case. Investigators found out that the arrested traffickers have connection with a gang in Morocco.

Ould Kablia lundi à Paris pour une réunion du G8 sur la drogue

Dimanche 8 Mai 2011 -- Dahou Ould Kablia, ministre de l’Intérieur, participera les 9 et 10 mai à une conférence des ministres de l’Intérieur du G8 élargi sur la lutte contre le trafic de drogue transatlantique. Le président français Nicolas Sarkozy recevra lundi à l'Élysée les ministres participant à cette réunion présidée par M. Claude Guéant, ministre français de l'Intérieur. Cette réunion a pour objectif de «proposer des solutions pour lutter contre le trafic de drogue, notamment dans la région du Sahel et dans les pays d’Amérique latine», a indiqué à TSA Dahou Ould Kablia. L’Algérie va «exposer sa stratégie de lutte contre la drogue, particulièrement la cocaïne et le cannabis», a ajouté le ministre qui a insisté sur «la coopération internationale en matière de lutte contre ce fléau». L’Algérie est d’autant plus concernée que le trafic de drogue est devenu l’une des principales sources de financement du terrorisme au Sahel. Les groupes terroristes s’associent avec la mafia et les barons de la drogue. Ce qui constitue un véritable danger pour le développement économique et social des pays de la région.

La réunion regroupera, outre les pays du G8 (États‑Unis, Canada, Japon, Russie, Royaume‑Uni, Italie, Allemagne), les pays les plus directement concernés d’Europe, d'Amérique latine et des Caraïbes, d'Afrique de l'Ouest et du Sahel (Pays‑Bas, Espagne, Mexique, Colombie, Pérou, Bolivie, Brésil, République dominicaine, Algérie, Maroc, Sénégal, Ghana, Nigeria, Afrique du Sud), ainsi que les représentants des organisations internationales et régionales actives sur le sujet (Commission européenne, ONUDC, OEA, OMD, Interpol, Europol, Banque Mondiale, Banque Interaméricaine de développement, Bureau des Nations Unies pour l' Afrique de l'Ouest), précise un communiqué de la Présidence française publié ce dimanche. Cette initiative débouchera sur l'adoption d'un plan d'action qui sera soumis aux chefs d'État et de gouvernement à Deauville, selon le communiqué de l’Élysée.

Algeria aborts attempt to smuggle 23 kg of drugs from Morocco

ALGIERS, May 8, 2011 (KUNA) -- On Sunday Algerian border guards aborted an attempt to smuggle 23 kilograms of drugs into the country from Morocco through cross-border trafficking bands. In a press statement the Algerian Border Guards authority said a group of smugglers had used an animal to take the drugs to the other side of the border at night. This is third drugs smuggling operation derailed by the border guards over the past three days, the statement said, noting that one of those operations included 130 kilograms of drugs also coming from Morocco. Moreover, on Saturday the border guards aborted the smuggling of 7,000 liters of gasoline from Algeria to Morocco. They also arrested nine illegal migrants who were trying to enter the country without valid visas.

G8, UN discuss AQIM ties to cocaine trade

May 11, 2011 -- Algeria, Morocco and 18 other African and Latin American countries affected by the transatlantic drug trafficking crisis attended a Group of Eight conference in Paris, AFP reported on Tuesday (May 10th). At the close of the "G8+Ministerial Meeting", the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was entrusted with setting up a fund to fight the phenomenon, El Khabar reported. UNODC chief Yuri Fedotov on Monday discussed links between the cocaine trade and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. On the sidelines of the G8 event, Morocco and the United Kingdom pledged to strengthen bilateral security co-operation, MAP reported.
