Bad-tempered women 'can blame it on genes'

Ever wonder why some women seem to be more ill-tempered than others? The answer may partly lie in their genes, according to a study published today.

University of Pittsburgh researchers report that anger, hostility and pugnacity may be rooted in variations in the DNA of a serotonin receptor gene - the gene responsible in the protein that picks up the brain messenger chemical serotonin.

Dr Indrani Halder, of the Cardiovascular Behavioural Medicine Programme at the University of Pittsburgh, will present the findings today at the American Psychosomatic Society's Annual Meeting in Budapest, Hungary.

The study, the first to look at the relationship between variations in the serotonin receptor 2C gene and anger and hostility, focused on 550 unrelated European women.

Researchers found that those who had one or both of two alterations in the promoter region of the serotonin receptor - the part of the gene that turns it on - were more likely to score lower on tests for anger and aggression.

Everyone is biologically unique, created with specific qualities and no person is created with 100% flawless genes. Whatever links ill temperedness or mischievousness with genes cannot be regarded as the root cause of the ill temperedness. There are other factors that make a human what they are- environmental factors. The way one is ‘formed’ socially is just as important as they way they are formed biologically. Having certain genes that do this or that is no excuse for being misgevious or ill tempered. This article my friends is one of many that produces a concept of medicalization of deeds. A concept that is debatable.

dats my lil sociologist!!! blame it on the environment!!!

Bas 3an jad - I agree, ya3ni - i admit i go crazy sometimes, but to blame it on my genes is way WAY too much. Learning to control your temper is an art. People (women) who can control their anger in any situation are considered stronger 3and Allah than the most physically fit person...
