JACKSONVILLE, Florida, November 28, 2007 -- Women love their lipstick. It is the one cosmetic most women wouldn't do without; women like Jeannine Rogozinski. "I think it makes you feel like a woman and you're put together when you're really not."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is examining claims from an American consumer group that it has found some brand name lipsticks contain potentially dangerous levels of lead. A recent study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found 61-percent of the 33 brands tested had detectible lead levels.

We asked Lynne Perry, "What would you think if you found your lipstick had lead in it?" She answered, "I would be upset because you lick your lips and you're ingesting it."

Henny Stewart added, "I would be unhappy and surprised that after all these years of women wearing lipstick that no one knew it contained lead."

First Coast News asked several women to hand over their lipstick so we could get it tested at a lab. We collected a total of 8 lipsticks; all different brands, colors and prices ranging from $1 to $75. Rogozinski says, "I would like to know if the one more expensive had more lead or less lead and if they were concerned in the making of it."

We sent the lipsticks off to a lab in North Carolina called Advanced Laboratories and waited for the results.

The FDA has not set a limit for lead in lipstick but it has set a 0.1 parts per million or ppm limit for lead in candy, a standard established to protect children from ingesting lead.

When our results came back, none of the lipsticks we had tested exceeded that limit. We did however discover 1 of the 8 lipsticks had a trace amount of lead at 0.077 ppm. It was the NYC Pink lipstick which was Perry's. When we told her she said, "That was the real cheap one." It cost a $1.

Now for the Revlon Red lipstick which was Rogozinski's. The results found no lead. She responded, "It did. That is wonderful."

And for Stewart's Mac Frost no lead was found. "Great. That's a sigh of relief because that's one of my favorite lipsticks."

While the women were pleased with the results there was still a concern that lead was found in one of them. Stewart says, "Can't take any chances. Any trace can be something to do some harm."

First Coast News contacted the manufacturer of N.Y.C. Pink lipstick but they did not return out calls.

The Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association trade group said in a statement that lead was a naturally occurring element that was not intentionally added to cosmetics.

The latest studies on lead however show there is no safe level of lead exposure.

November 23rd, 2007 -- Lead in lipstick is has attracted the attention of some powerful law makers. Former presidential candidate Senator John Kerry-along with senators Barbara Boxter and Dianne Feinstein-is leading an attack on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accusing them of oversight and criticizing them for failing to respond to the potential health hazard of this toxic substance in lipsticks.

The issue of lead in lipsticks made news following the Campaign for Safe Cosmetic’s (CSC) recently published research claiming that many popular lipsticks contain unacceptably high lead levels. The FDA promised to investigate lead content in the lipsticks tested by the CSC; however, the senators consider the move insufficient and are demanding the FDA perform and publicly publish test results on a wide range of brands in a variety of colors. If results are similar to what the CSC revealed, they want the FDA to take action to reduce consumer exposure to lead and establish maximum standards for lipstick and other cosmetics.

Lead is known to cause cancer and reproductive harm and can cause mental and physical retardation and behavioral and other health problems in children. In adults, lead can damage the nervous system. Recent studies indicate that no level of lead is safe. The FDA does not set a limit for lead in lipstick, but argues their regulations cover lead levels in lipstick coloring.

The senators have stated that this recent revelation of unsafe lead levels in lipstick is the latest reminder of the FDA’s insufficient safeguards. They feel that toxic chemicals do not belong in products people are exposed to daily and the FDA should be doing all in its power to remove lead-tainted products from the marketplace. Cosmetics trade associations insist the lead in lipsticks is negligible and poses no health risk to consumers, claiming the average amount of lead a woman would be exposed to when using cosmetics is 1,000 times less than the amount taking in from drinking water that meets Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards.

According to the CSC, one-third of red lipsticks tested by an independent lab exceeded the FDA’s limit for lead in candy - 0.1 parts per million (ppm) - a standard established to protect children from directly ingesting lead. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure. In its initial report, the CSC argued that the FDA has set a 0.1 ppm limit on lead in candy, while it had found as much as 0.65 ppm of lead in lipsticks. Some feel it is unfair to make a direct comparison between lead levels in food and lipstick, that the amount of lipstick one ingests normally is much smaller than if consumed; however, lead builds up in the body over time and others feel that lead-containing lipstick, applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels.

The FDA said it is aware of concerns about lead in lipstick and is following up on the report, saying the concerns have not generally been supported by FDA’s own analysis of products on the market, but they are looking into the specific details of the issues raised.

[60:8] GOD does not enjoin you from befriending those who do not fight you because of religion, and do not evict you from your homes. You may befriend them and be equitable towards them. GOD loves the equitable.

[60:9] GOD enjoins you only from befriending those who fight you because of religion, evict you from your homes, and band together with others to banish you. You shall not befriend them. Those who befriend them are the transgressors
