Prime Minister Nehru has renewed his appeal for an immediate ceasefire in Algeria and a negotiated settlement. In a speech at a banquet given in his honour by the Syrian President Shukri el Kuwatly in Damascus on June 22, Mr. Nehru deplored the continuing tragedy in Algeria and said there was no doubt that Algeria would attain freedom but in the meantime people were being killed. Some time ago India had put forward a suggestion that there should be a ceasefire so as to stop the killing and get a peaceful settlement. "It is not for us to say what the detailed terms of the settlement should be - that is for the people of Algeria and France. But India had suggested that there should be a ceasefire and negotiations because in the end there is bound to be a ceasefire and there are bound to be negotiations. If peace is to come, why should not it come today?"
