May 1, 2008 -- The 71st annual slate of free Sunday afternoon performances at Stern Grove opens with the R&B double bill of Booker T. Jones and Bettye LaVette on June 15 and closes with an all-American program by the San Francisco Opera on August 17. Musical appetites of all kinds will be satisfied, as one of the city's enduring traditions rolls on through the sun- and fog-laced summer.
Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 are joined by Sila and the Afrofunk Experience on June 22, followed by the San Francisco Symphony performing Beethoven, Verdi and more on June 29. Other attractions include singer-songwriter Allen Toussaint (July 6); French Algerian fusion specialist Rachid Taha (July 13); Moroccan-themed program Alonzo King's Lines Ballet (July 20); Voices of Latin Rock (July 27); trance, trip-hop and tango Bajofondo (August 3); and Hawaiian music Na Leo, Kaukahi, One Right Turn and Ernie Cruz Jr. (August 10).
Sigmund Stern Grove is at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard, shielded from wind and traffic noise by trees and its sunken setting. Grove veterans know to arrive early with blankets and picnics.
