December 26, 2008 -- The University of Sheffield (UK) will host an international conference on contemporary Algerian cultures between June 5th-7th 2009. The conference will coincide with a major festival of contemporary Algerian culture, including music, cinema, contemporary visual arts, sport and literature, scheduled to take place in a variety of venues across the city of Sheffield in June 2009.

The conference will address all aspects of contemporary Algerian culture, including art, music, media, literature, publishing, theatre, photography, performance, sport and cinema. The focus will be on cultural production and identities in Algeria, although proposal for papers engaging with Algerian diasporic cultures are also welcome. We particularly welcome papers that explore Berber cultural production and amazighité.

The deadline for submitting proposals is February 28th 2009

Proposals are sought for papers and also panel sessions

For individual papers

Please submit an abstract (approx. 250-300 words) including title, description and contact information.

For panel proposals:

Please submit a description of the topic to be addressed by the panel and short abstracts for each of the proposed papers.
You should also include contact details for all panel participants and proposed chair.
