25e festival du cinema Panafrica International :
Mascarades doublement primé à Montréal

Lundi 27 Avril 2009 -- Ce n’est pas un mais deux prix qu’a remportés Mascarades, le film du réalisateur algérien, Lyès Salem, au 25e Festival de Cinema Panafrica International de Montréal qui s’est tenu du 16 du mois en cours jusqu’à hier dans la métropole canadienne. Lyès Salem a eu à se lever à deux reprises lors de la soirée de clôture du Festival. La première fois pour recevoir au nom de l’actrice algérienne, Rym Takoucht, le prix de l’interprétation féminine pour le rôle de la femme de Mounir (interprété par Lyès Salem) dans Mascarades. Et la deuxième fois pour recevoir lui-même le prix du meilleur long métrage pour le même film. La satire sociale de Lyès Salem a fait l’unanimité parmi les membres du jury qui l’a choisi pour « la justesse de l’interprétation des acteurs et le scénario très bien ficelé. Son humour savoureux mis au service d’un thème profond (le libre choix dans le mariage). La maîtrise de son sujet et de sa réalisation — la première pour Lyès Salem ». En aparté, Lyès Salem a affirmé à El Watan que « ce prix est gratifiant » pour lui et pour toute son équipe. Il lui permet aussi de bien négocier sa distribution au Canada. Le jeu de Rym Takoucht a convaincu le jury qui l’a récompensée pour « sa force et sa lumière au service d’un personnage complexe et parfois ingrat. Pour l’exactitude et la subtilité de son jeu. Pour son interprétation parfois troublante et toujours touchante ». Le réalisateur algérien, visiblement content des honneurs obtenus par son film, a soutenu que Rym Takoucht, qui ne s’est pas déplacée au Canada, sera agréablement surprise du prix qu’elle a obtenu. Elle a déjà été récompensée pour le même rôle du prix du meilleur espoir féminin lors des dernières journées cinématographiques de Carthage (Tunisie). L’Algérie a obtenu deux autres prix : le prix du court métrage pour Samir Guesmi avec C’est Dimanche ! Le jeune acteur Illiès Boukouirène, qui y joué le rôle principal, a remporté le trophée du meilleur acteur. Le choix du jury s’est porté sur lui pour « sa candeur et son naturel. Pour l’économie avec laquelle, il nous offre des moments d’une grande intensité. Pour la force de sa présence. Pour nous avoir charmés et émus de la première à la dernière image. Pour son éventail de jeux déjà si large, alors qu’il est encore très jeune ». Le Festival Panafrica International, dont l’affiche officielle intitulée Regard africain, œuvre du peintre algérien Azzedine Mekbel, reviendra au mois d’avril 2010 pour sa 26e édition.

Algerian cinema wins big at African film festival of Montreal

Montreal, April 27, 2009 (APA) Algerian cinema dominated the 2009 edition of Vues d’Afrique Festival (Pan-African International Festival) with the films Mascarades and C’est Dimanche. The festival ended Saturday in Montreal, Canada. The panel of judges of the international fiction category awarded both productions. Feature film Mascarades by Lyes Salem won Radio Canada’s Intellectual communication prize. The film was the winner of the bronze “Yennenga Stallion” at the 2009 Pan African Film and Television Festival. It tells the story of a proud and bragging young man, Mounir, living in a village somewhere in Algeria. Mounir wants to be recognized for his true worth. But his Achilles heel is that everyone makes fun of his sister, Rym, who sleeps all the time. One evening when he returned from town drunk, Mounir announced in the village that a rich foreign businessman asked for the hand of his sister in marriage. All of a sudden, she was courted by all. Blinded by his lies, Mounir will unwittingly change the destiny of his family. The other Algerian winning film, C’est Dimanche by Samir Guesmi, won the short film intercultural communication prize. In this film, Ibrahim, 13, tells his father that he got his certificate while he was expelled from his high school. Algeria also won the “Images des Femmes” prize for best actress of sub-Saharan Africa and Creole countries, courtesy of the African journal Amina. Rym Takoucht won the prize for her role as Mounir’s wife in Mascarades. The best actor award went to Algerian Illias Boukouirene for playing Ibrahim in C’est Dimanche. Fasozine magazine sponsored the prize.

Triomf by Michael Raeburn of South Africa got the special award of the panel of judges. Victoire Terminus by Renaud Barret and Florent de la Tullaye of France won the TV5 Québec-Canada prize in the international documentary category. Short film Rallye d’Helene by Choun Mangondo (DRC) received a similar prize. Moroccan filmmaker Leila Kilani got the Micheline Vaillancourt prize by the French-speaking Radio and Television International Council (CIRTEF) for short or feature film. The “Africa digital merit” was awarded to Paris à tout prix by Josephine Ndagou of Cameroon. She also won the best feature or medium-length film. Le pelerine du Nou of Abakar Chene Massar and Bentley Brown of Chad got a honorary award. Best Short Film is awarded to Les egares de l’hemispheres Sud by Daddy Ruhorahoza of Rwanda. Best TV drama and series went to L’As du lycée by Missa Hébié of Burkina Faso. The "Regards d’ici" selection, comprising Canadian films, consecrated Les marrons de l’Alphabet by Dimitri Médard. He received the best independent production ACIC/ ONF prize by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). The best promising-film prize for a first film on Africa or Creole countries (African and Creole communities in Canada) was awarded to Trois Rois by Katia Paradis of Canada. Le Silence est d’or of Canadian Alexandra Sicotte-Lévesque got an honorary award.

The 25th edition of Vues d’Afrique Festival which started on 16 April screened nearly 130 films. Special events and premieres, discoveries, encounters, screenings marked this year’s edition. This event, initiated by Gérald Le Chêne (its founding president), established itself in the cultural agenda of the city of Montreal in a quarter century of existence. Festival Vues d’Afrique celebrates its 26th anniversary on 15-25 April 2010.
