April 5, 2010 -- Los Tigres del Norte, Mexico's superstars of norteno, and Algeria's Khaled - known as "the King of Rai" - will be featured in this summer's 2010 Global Pop at the Music Center concert series at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Los Tigres will perform on June 25 and Khaled on July 16. A Music Center spokeswoman said the organization soon will announce a third concert for the series, which was started three years ago to showcase artists from the home countries of Southern California's immigrants.
During its four-decade career, Los Tigres has recorded more than 55 albums and topped the charts throughout the Spanish-speaking world. The Grammy-winning band is known for its songs about immigration and its narcocorridos about what it sees as another reality of life - drug trafficking. The group's five members are from Sinaloa state but now live in California, where they have a huge fan base.
Khaled Hadj Brahim began performing as Cheb Khaled ("young Khaled" in Arabic) as a teen in the 1970s and helped give traditional Algerian rai's laments about everyday struggles a pop-populist sound. Now known as Khaled, he has gained international success as a concert and recording artist - selling more than 46 million albums - and has contributed music for movies in Hollywood, Bollywood and Europe. The Global Pop series is presented by the Blue Ribbon, a group of women leaders who support the arts and education activities of the Music Center and its resident companies.
