Lightbulb Let’s Learn: Chinese 中文 (Mandarin 普通话)

    السلام على من اتبع الهدى
    & Hi,

    大家好!

As the title suggests, this thread is for learning Standard Chinese, also known as Standard Mandarin, or just simply Mandarin (普通话 Pǔtōnghuà).

    To start-off, here's a very useful website:

haha very funny Mohovitch OK then why eat mandarin when you can eat china Actually, China - the country - happens to be the biggest producer of mandarin apparently! Funny that!

Also, interestingly, according to the Online Etymology Dictionary:

    "mandarin
"Chinese official," 1589, via Port. mandarim or Du. mandorijn from Malay mantri, from Hindi mantri "councilor, minister of state," from Skt. mantri, nom. of mantrin- "advisor," from mantra "counsel," from PIE base *men- "to think" (see mind). Form infl. in Port. by mandar "to command, order." Used generically for the several grades of Chinese officials; sense of "chief dialect of Chinese" (spoken by officials and educated people) is from 1604. The type of small, deep-colored orange so called from 1771, from resemblance of its color to that of robes worn by mandarins."

So the connection between Mandarin the language, and mandarin the fruit is closer than you think

On the topic of oranges, phew! There are many names for orange and mandarin in Chinese it's confusing. Among them I'm choosing:

Orange: 橙子, 橘子 (can also mean: tangerine; mandarin orange)
    Mandarin orange: 瓯柑

Yes, I noticed that you use Traditional Chinese as you did here:

But I can easily convert it to simplified using Google So it becomes:
