    hi all,

I am slowly developing an interest in algerian culture and language. i have noticed that the prefix 'bou' is used in many names and town names. What does the 'bou' mean? I know a man named Ziane yet some call him Bouzian or Bouziane. Are these 3 names the same? I have also noticed names on the map such as Boukhari, Bou Arfa, Bou Anane. What does the 'bou ' stand for?

i look forward to you responses.

Bou means in general father of..but you can trnslate it to with as well. Bouarfa means the the one who has knowledge, Bouziane or Bouzian mea with beauty etc. If you se aguy walking with a bag in his hand you can easily call Bougouffa or the guy "withbag" don't mind ask again

    Thumbs up prefix "bou"

The prefix "bou" is from berber language which means "the one who has" or "from".
    some examples:
aarur= the back in berber "bou-aarura"= hunchback, le bossu
bou-khenfouch or bou-nif = the one with a big nose. In these cases it enphasis the features characteristics.
The prefix "bou" can also be found in Pharaonic language with the same meanings.

    Hey there:

Then the French administration some time during its occupation proceeded with the removal of all "NOBLE" names as it did on main land France whereby a 'DE' i.e. 'OF' a region or ARCH (CLAN: assembly of villages).

Such work had been done by low level(education) administration personnel in places and soldiers in others.
ALL to easy french prononciation. The same way as you can expect to see it in Vietnamese names. Now SINGLE european word can carry as much info as an asian one. It woul rather take a sentence! Imagine how much info can be lost in that, and no wonder many ALgerians LOST important components of their identity.
    Hope this helps.
