Amelio to film Camus' First Man

May 19, 2008 -- Italian auteur Gianni Amelio will shoot a French-language adaptation of Albert Camus' autobiographical last novel The First Man with Claudia Cardinale attached to star [in it].

Part childhood memoir, part epic narrative of Camus' beloved Algeria and its struggle for independence from France, The First Man was left unfinished by Camus. The manuscript by the existentialist master was found in a mud-spattered briefcase near the site of the car crash in which the 1957 Nobel Prize-winner died in 1960, at age 46.

"It's a complicated film because it has to be partly shot in Algeria," says the picture's co-producer Riccardo Tozzi, who enthuses, "Amelio has written a great screenplay." While this logistical aspect makes talk of a shooting date premature, Tozzi said he is confident that this will be Amelio's next project.

Amelio's previous features include Cannes Grand Jury prizewinner The Stolen Children.

French producer Bruno Pesery is the main producer behind this as-yet untitled picture. Tunisian-born Cardinale will play Camus' beautiful but deaf and distant mother.

Amelio to adapt Camus' 'First Man'

Rome, February 10, 2009 -- Italo auteur Gianni Amelio's adaptation of Albert Camus' last novel The First Man is set to start shooting by April in North Africa and France with Gallic stars Jacques Gamblin and Denis Podalydes attached along with Claudia Cardinale.

Amelio's first foray into French-language filmmaking, based on the Nobel prize-winner's unfinished autobiographical work, turns on Camus' native Algeria and its struggle for independence from France. The manuscript was found in a briefcase when Camus died in a car crash in 1960.

Budgeted at $11.6 million and co-produced by Italy's Cattleya and Gaul's Bruno Pesery, Man will partly shoot in several seaside and desert locations in Algeria, with which France has a co-production agreement. Wild Bunch is handling international sales.

Gamblin, who is Cesar-nominated as protagonist of Gallic hit The First Day of the Rest of Your Life, has been tapped by Amelio to play Camus alter-ego Jacques Cormery, who at 40 returns from Gaul to pre-civil war Algeria and relives his childhood. Tunisian-born Cardinale will play his beautiful but deaf and distant mother. The costume picture is set during the late 1950s. Algerian talent will also be featured.

The complex screenplay is by Amelio. Regular Amelio d.p. Luca Bigazzi will be lensing.

Amelio last year replaced Nanni Moretti as artistic director of the ultra-indie Turin Film Festival, which runs in late November. He has said helming The First Man will not conflict with his festival assembling duties.

Amelio's previous features include Lamerica, Stolen Children and Venice Golden Lion winner The Way We Laughed.

Le tournage aura lieu à Oran, Alger et Mostaganem :
«Le premier homme» d'Albert Camus adapté au cinéma

Samedi 13 Juin 2009 -- Grande nouvelle pour les amoureux d'Albert Camus : un film tiré de son oeuvre posthume, à savoir Le premier homme, est en ce moment en préparation. Cette adaptation sera assurée par le réalisateur italien, Gianni Amelio, qui se trouve en ce moment même en Algérie pour le travail de repérage. Quand bien même ce long métrage sera l'adaptation d'une oeuvre de Camus, on peut le considérer comme étant un film retraçant la vie de l'écrivain. Et cela parce que Le premier homme, roman inachevé du reste, n'est autre que l'autobiographie de Camus, trouvée dans une valise après sa mort, le 4 janvier 1960. Gianni Amelio, qu'on connaît entre autres pour avoir réalisé Les enfants volés (prix du jury et prix oecuménique du Festival de Cannes en 1992), récidive cette fois avec un film qui sera à la fois tourné en Algérie et en France. Ce sera l'acteur français Jacques Gambin qui endossera le personnage de Jacques Cormery, le héros de l'histoire. Claudia Cardinale, qu'on connaît par ailleurs pour avoir sublimement joué dans Le pigeon, Enquête à l'italienne, ou encore Les gouapes, assurera quant à elle le rôle de la mère sourde et distante de Jacques Cormery. Denis Podalydès, autre acteur français, aura lui aussi un rôle dans le film, mais pour l'heure, on n'en sait pas plus. À cette occasion, la cinémathèque d'Oran a projeté, mardi dernier, un des films récents de Gianni Amelio, à savoir L'étoile imaginaire. Ce film, sorti en 2007 et interprété par George Castellitto (Catterina va en ville) et Lin Tai, pouvait très bien s'intituler « Les tribulations d'un Italien en Chine». C'est l'histoire d'un responsable des ventes d'une grande entreprise spécialisée dans la perception de machines, qui s'en va en Chine pour tenter de réparer sa faute, après avoir vendu à une société chinoise un lot de machines défaillantes. Là-bas, il fait la connaissance d'une Chinoise sachant manier la langue italienne ; elle se propose alors de l'aider dans son périple... Pour en revenir au film Le premier homme, il est à noter également que pour ce qui est du tournage côté Algérie, cela se passera entre Oran, Alger et Mostaganem. D'aucuns disent que le tournage est imminent, au point de commencer pas plus tard que cet été. Mais cela reste toujours dans le vague.
