    Salaam,

    To cut a long story short, I would say:

    Grey Area = Area of circle O - Area of the inscribed equilateral hexagon

    no?

    tip: integrate once and then multiply by 6.

    circle with centre (a, b) and radius r has equation:
    (x minus a)2+(y minus b) 2 =R2

    So what's the answer?
    (what's R2? R squared?)
    yes R2 is R squared

    a=b=1/2*R* sqroot(2) = 0.7071*R

    You mean the length AB = 0.7071*R

    By visualising the picture again, you can see AB can't be smaller than R.

    Which is:

    Grey Area = (Pi R^2) - (3 sq root 3 / 2)R^2

    Which means:

    Grey Area = R^2 ( Pi - 3 sq root 3 / 2)
