It's simple! To emphasise the importance of marriage which acts as a protection for the person and guards against MANY things like promiscuity, fornication etc. which are disallowed. So the person would then be required to save the remaining half of their faith!

Is it literally half the religion? Because I'm not sure whether it's a saying or something...

No sweety it's a hadith, the Prophet (pbuh) said: "When a man marries, he indeed perfects half of his religion then he should fear Allah for the remaining half".Originally posted by algerie4ever

what is life really anyhow.. youre single and you work and you live with your family.. some of us move out and work.. and then visit our family.. one day we get married and go to work and visit our family. your spouse becomes your family.. and children you have are family... its work and family.. anything else you may do is in some way connected to your work.. or your life.. which is your family..
its easy to see how a marriage can account for half of someones belief system. somewhere in there is YOU.
for whatever reason.. some people do not choose to marry and some others for whatever other reason wont marry.. does this mean they are empty of half of their religion?
i dont think so. i cannot believe that a bad person who is married is closer to religious fullfillment than a good person who is single.
Marriage is something that if done right will bring you lots of joy.. and if you done wrong.. lots of headaches.

See how many times you mentioned the word "family" which is exactly the reason why marriage is important in Islam. Family is very important and is the basic unit of society rather than the person as an individual which is the basic unit of Western societies!Originally posted by wisdom_seeker

And that is why marriage is considered half the religion.
