    Hello everyone,

I am a 20 year old student from the U.S. (Chicago). Actually, my entire family is from Algeria, but I was the first (and only) born in the states. I've been to Algeria once in my life, and that was a very long time ago so my memory doesn't serve me well. This might sound silly, but I'm trying to get in touch with my roots - it's hard to do, though, when there is little or no Algerian culture around. I have yet to meet another Algerian in the states. My first encounter with someone from Algeria other than my family was last summer in Rome - I was so glad just to meet someone of the same background. I do my best to read books on the country, but they are limited.
I long to go back to Algeria so I may see for myself where my family came from... but that day seems very far away due to the present situation. My parents have only made one trip back to their home in the past 10 years, and they haven't had the most positive perspective on visitng the country. Maybe you can inform me a little more about the current events there. I would love to hear from anybody. Is it safe for an American to visit? I hear rumors that it is not, but it seems that many involved in these discussions have had pleasant experiences.
Arabic and French were my first languages becuase I lived in Algeria for three years right after I was born in the States. However, when I returned to America, both languages were lost - especially the Arabic. This is unfortunate. When I look back on my past, this is one of the few things I would change. I have, however, taken many classes in French, so it's easy to communicate with me that way if you need to.

Thanks for listening - please feel free to write back!

    Adil

    What's up Adil...

What's up Adil I am a 21 year old male living in Toronto and I find myself in a very similar situation like yourself. I was actually born in Algeria but I left early when I was 6 years old and I never came back. I totally hear you about getting back in touch with your roots, Im kind of going through the same thing here, I have never met an Algerian in Toronto. Yeah I speak french and english as well. I would love to go back to Algeria too but due to the present situation I don't know if that would be a safe idea. Also I am not sure if the army would draft me if I went there because I am supposed to do my military service. Anyways bro if you wanna gimme a shout, email me

    PEACE OUT.
