Salam all!
Is there a doctor or soon to be doctor here? Or more specifically, someone who's familiar w/ the MCAT... ?
Well, my question is... on the MCAT, do they test you on physics w/ calculus, or just general physics...
i looked for answers in their homepage, but they weren't that specific...
please i'll appreciate any help...

hi,
i looked at some of their past questions, and to some of the course material related to preparing for that exam.
MCAT tests your knowledge of basic biology/physics/thermodynamics/maths and logical thinking at both high school level and undergraduate university level, so i would advice you to revise both what you did in high school and what you did in uni.
you will find many books to help you revise the right topics for this specific exam and trying past questions is always the best method cause the fundamentals of sciences do not change, they will just ask you to apply them for different situations.
i wanted to take that exam but then i saw it s so expensive and the process of applying to medicine is just so long and complicated (for example if you register now for the MCAT, you will pass it in april 2007 and once you have those results you can apply for admission in september 2007, and if successful, you will start in september 2008!!! basically 2 years!!! as you can not apply for medical admission this year because you missed the MCAT exam in august 2006)!!!
anyways, i gave up because of these complications but my biggest dream was always to be a doctor.
i dont know, but if you really wanna go through these long procedures, i would be more than happy to join you, maybe it's easier if you go through this with someone else (if we are based in close cities) so that we can assist each other.
let me know if you are interested so that we can arrange something, otherwise, best of luck to you and let me know if u have anymore questions.Miss NinaGucci says: The Grass is Always Greener on The Other Side Of the Fence

awww, thanks habibty!
well, i'm not exactly ready to take the MCAT yet cuz i haven't finished my undergrad classes yet. I know that we're tested on all that stuff, bas i just wanted to know which physics class to take-- calculus based or trig based-- (so i wouldn't have to take it again later), bas alhamdulilah i asked a councilor and he said that i should take the calculus based physics....
girl?! why'd u give up... ?! I know it takes a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time to fullfill ur dream, a lot of money, and a LOT of stress.... but just think, when it's all over the money u'll make will make the past med school costs miniscule... and my father always tells me that before the test there's a period of rediculous amounts of stress, then after lots of hard study u'll get the grade u deserve and celebrate, and in that moment u'll forget about ALL the pain and all-nighters before the test....
---of course, being a doctor isn't just about the money. In my opinion, there's no better job than helping ppl, and knowing more about Allah (swt) creation. Knowledge is bliss
There's a saying that i heard somewhere and it's like "the cost of ignorance is much more than that of education"
everytime i see it (it's my friends screenname)--- i turn off my computer and go study
I hope that u change ur mind about being a doctor cuz it's always the saddest thing when u don't acheive ur goal (unless ur not interested in medicine anymore, of course)
I'll keep in contact w/ u cuz i have LOTS of questions but i have to sit and think about them 1st... so inshaAllah, i'll ask away whenever i'm

ps: i'm guessing u live in the US... right? if so which state (u don't have to say here)

hi bent bladi,
just to update u on the situation, there are some schools in quebec (universite de montreal, sherbrooke, laval) which do not require the MCAT...
i dont know if you thought of applying since our last conversation...but if it can be inspirational to anyone..i have...and i had several interviews..and tests, so now im waiting for their answer.
anyways...the process is not as complicated as if you had to pass the MCAT, but it would cost you a lot of money (especially if you have to travel from far away as i am doing now...) so, make sure you have a lot of savings for the admission process.
universite de montreal doesnt ask anything technical, all what they care about is your personality and your ability to deal with different situations, dilemas and ethical issues...so prepare yourself psychologically really...the rest is all about your grades (uni or high school). as for sherbrooke, no interviews but you have to pass a psychometric test and it s all about your grades again...i donow for laval..
i know that universite de montreal produces more than half the number of doctors in the whole province of quebec, and that these med schools are one of the cheapest in north america and have the 3rd biggest admission rate in north america as well...cheap does not necessarily mean bad quality...it is just their policy so far (careful from 2012 the tuition fees will double...).
so...good luck if you wanna apply, i know it s late for this year...but you can start for the next year...
hope this helps and wish me good luck....i donow what i can do of my life if i dont become a doctor...it's not a very pleasant feeling when you dont reach professional satisfaction.

wow! I didn't know that - thanks for sharing nina.
Actually, it's still a bit early for me to be applying - I'm still a second year premed
. I do plan on taking the MCAT, inshaAllah, and most likely very soon, like next year or something
.
Yikes - I didn't know about this terrifying doubling of tuition
. InshaAllah - if everything goes as planned, I'll be applying sometime in 2010 or 2011.
As for which school - of course, I'm aiming for what's closest to home (and the ones near home ain't so bad
). My parents are so determined that I become a doctor (not nearly as much as I am, though
) that they're willing to send me to the Caribbean if the worst comes to the worst.... so Alhamdulilah - there really isn't a way you can't become a doctor.
And I'm so glad you changed your mind!! Mabrouk! This world needs bright minds like yours in the medical field
Take care and Allah ma3ek ALWAYS

PS: I'll update you on what happens of my side, too
