Note: East-West Connection is an international group established last year for cross-cultural understanding. It provides talks on different religions and cultures, and hosts some social events. There has fairly often been a focus on Muslim cultures and on Islam; Tony Young, the group's organizer, has lived in the Soviet Union for three years and in Turkey for about half a year, and has many Muslim friends.
I help Tony with publicizing the group's meetings and events. As for my background, I have been to China twice, once to study Chinese for a semester and once to teach English for a year at an agricultural university, and my husband, who I met through East-West Connection, is Pakistani. I have introduced Iranian and Turkish friends to this group.
The group is intended primarily for single people, from college age to professionals in their mid to late 40s. There is a good range of people of different ages and ethnicities, including Hispanic, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian people. Many (not all) of the Americans who attend these meetings have studied or worked overseas.
Meeting attendance varies from 50 to 150 people. The group meets every other Saturday (first and third Saturdays of each month). To get on the group's mailing list to be notified of meetings and special events (and smaller special-interest groups such as photography clubs), please send an email to the group's organizer, Tony Young, at east_west_connection@hotmail.com, introducing yourself and asking to be added to the mailing list.
It's a great group with many very nice, well-traveled, and well-educated people. Tony Young is a very warm, approachable, and helpful person. I'm sure all of you would enjoy meetings of the group.
