Algeria hit by surge in guerrilla violence

Algiers - Ten soldiers in eastern Algeria have been injured, three of them seriously, in a bomb attack attributed by local media on Monday to Islamic militants.

The remotely detonated device exploded on Sunday as a military convoy was conducting a search in the region of Annaba, about 600km east of Algiers, according to the reports.

Last week, three soldiers and two armed civilians were killed in an ambush in the Biskra region, south of the capital. That attack was also attributed by media reports to an armed Islamist group, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat.

At least 50 people, 26 of them members of different security forces, have died in clashes since the beginning of November, according to a tally based on official and press reports.

CAIRO [MENL] -- Algeria's largest insurgency group has acquired surface-to-air weapons.

Algerian security sources said the Salafist Brigade for Combat and Call has acquired SA-7 surface-to-air missile systems. The sources said the Salafists have fired the Russian-origin shoulder-fired missiles and struck an Algerian Air Force helicopter.

"This is the first time that the Salafists have used such weapons," a source said. "It seems to mark an increase in capability."

The sources said the Salafist attack took place on Nov. 22 in the Buskara province about 550 kilometers south of Algiers. They said the helicopter managed to land safely and the crew was not injured.

10 terrorists killed and another arrested in Biskra and Batna

CAIRO [MENL] -- The Algerian military has launched an offensive against Al Qaida-aligned insurgents.

The Algerian military has sent ground and air units in the mountains in the southern region in an effort to dislodge forces of the Salafist Brigade for Combat and Call. Security sources said military units have been operating in the regions of Batna and Biskra, about 400 kilometers southeast of Algiers.

The sources said the offensive was launched in wake of a series of Salafist strikes. In the latest attack on Nov. 21, a Salafist unit fired an anti-aircraft missile that downed a military helicopter in Batna.

On Nov. 30, the Algerian daily Al Khabar reported that 10 Salafist operatives have been killed so far in the military operation. The newspaper said the military clashed with Salafist fighters twice over the last week.

Impliqués dans plusieurs attentats contre les forces de sécurité, certains membres du groupe dont l’âge varie de 18 à 60 ans ont rejoint le maquis depuis 1995. Les forces de police de Boumerdès viennent de démanteler le plus gros réseau de terroristes et de soutien aux groupes terroristes du GSPC activant dans la région est de cette wilaya.

Il s’agit de 13 redoutables éléments ayant soit soutenu des actes terroristes, soit participé directement aux attentats contre les forces de sécurité. La dernière tentative remonte au mois de ramadan. Certains d’entre eux ont été choisis par leur chef pour exécuter un attentat à la bombe contre la police de Bordj-Menaïel faisant 3 blessés graves.

Ces informations auraient été divulguées par les mis en cause lors des interrogatoires dirigés par les enquêteurs de la police judiciaire. Selon notre source, «bien que la majorité de ces éléments ne soient pas fichés, ils sont tout de même considérés comme de véritables terroristes».

Plusieurs chefs d’inculpation ayant un lien direct ou indirect avec les actes terroristes, à l’exemple des opérations de pose de bombe et d’alimentation des terroristes en armes et munitions leurs sont imputées. En mouvement permanent entre les localités situées à l’est de Boumerdès et la région de Tizi Ouzou, certains de ces éléments activent depuis 1995 sous la houlette du GSPC de la zone 2 dirigé par l’émir Abdelhamid Saadaoui, alias Abou El-Haythem.

L’enquête menée par les forces de la police a révélé que ces éléments de soutien des groupes de terroristes très mobiles sont impliqués dans plusieurs actes contre les forces de sécurité survenus dans la région est de la wilaya, ainsi que dans l’assistance multiforme offerte aux terroristes.

Il s’agit plus précisément du ravitaillement en denrées alimentaires, de la logistique diverse, notamment des munitions et des téléphones, du transport de marchandise, du soutien financier à travers l’organisation de racket ainsi que de la surveillance des mouvements des forces de sécurité.

Leur axe principal de mouvement se situe à Bordj-Menaïel et s’étend de Dellys, Sahel-Bouberak, Cap-Djinet, Chaabet-Ameur, Timezrit, Naciria jusqu’aux villages de la Kabylie accrochés aux montagnes abruptes de Bouira et Tizi Ouzou.

Selon notre source, certains d’entre eux ont rejoint le maquis du GSPC en 1995, alors qu’ils étaient très jeunes, c’est-à-dire entre 13 ans et 17 ans, puisque, lors de leur arrestation, leur tranche d’âge variait entre 18 et 60 ans».

Ils sont commerçants et trabendistes Tout en appartenant aux groupes armés, ces derniers ont pour activité le commerce multiforme, celui des produits agricoles, l’élevage, l’agroalimentaire. Ils sont aussi trabendistes en matière d’habillement et autres effets.

Les services de sécurité ont réussi à récupérer 3 véhicules chez ces terroristes. Ces véhicules de type fourgon sont aménagés l’un pour le transport de marchandises destinées aux groupes armés, le deuxième pour le transport des éléments armés et le troisième pour le mouvement de ces éléments dans le but de surveiller les mouvement des forces armées.

Depuis plusieurs années, ces éléments travaillent directement avec la Katibat El-Ansar du GSPC composée d’au moins une quarantaine de terroristes. Notre source indique que tous les actes terroristes survenus dans cette région sont attribués à Katibat El-Ansar actuellement dirigée par l’»émir» Harak, dit Sofiane, originaire de Bordj-Menaïel.

Ce dernier a réussi à échapper à plusieurs reprises aux services de sécurité lors des ratissages et opérations antiterroristes. Un officier de la police chargé de la lutte antiterroriste dans cette région précise que l’accalmie qui règne depuis quelques semaines dans la région de Boumerdès s’explique justement par l’arrestation de ce groupe qui était poursuivi par les forces de sécurité depuis plus d’un mois.

Grâce à ce coup de filet, le GSPC a été complètement déstabilisé et amputé d’un groupe très actif qui encadrait et soutenait tous les actes terroristes. Ces 13 éléments ont été arrêtés séparément, le premier groupe à Cap-Djinet et le second du côté de Bordj-Menaïel.

Présentés hier devant le procureur de Bordj-Menaïel, les 13 éléments ont tous été écroués à la maison d’arrêt d’El-Harrach.

ALGIERS, Algeria: Algerian security forces killed four suspected Islamic militants in an overnight clash at a checkpoint in the mountainous northeast, the state news agency reported Saturday.

Gunmen opened fire on a security officer approaching a car at the checkpoint in the Biskra region, and fellow officers returned fire, the APS agency cited security officials as saying.

Four militants were killed and one police officer was injured, APS said. Police found a Kalashnikov rifle, an automatic pistol, a grenade and ammunition in the car.

The unnamed security officials cited by APS said the four militants were involved in the downing of a military helicopter in the Batna region last month, an attack that killed three soldiers and two local guards. Security officials said the same thing about gunmen killed in a clash last week, but neither claim could be verified.

4 suspected Islamic militants killed in clashes with Algerian army

ALGIERS, Algeria: Assailants hurled a bomb and fired at two vehicles carrying employees of a subsidiary of U.S. company Halliburton near Algiers on Sunday, killing one Algerian driver, witnesses said.

The full extent of casualties was unclear.

Nine American employees of BRC, or Brown & Root-Condor, were heading from their offices to a Sheraton Hotel where they are housed in Bouchaoui, 15 kilometers (9 miles) west of Algiers, when they were attacked. Sunday is a working day in this North African country.

The Americans were in a bus following behind a security vehicle that held two Algerians. The assailants hurled a bomb at the first vehicle, immediately killing the driver and injuring the passenger, the witnesses said.

Attackers then opened fire on the second bus, which quickly turned around and headed back to the BRC offices before the gunmen dispersed. Witnesses said it appeared there were no casualties in the Americans' bus.

Algerian security officials immediately blocked off roads in the area, adjacent to a forest on the Mediterrannean coast.

BRC offices could not be reached for comment. BRC is a joint venture between Halliburton's Brown & Root and Condor Engineering SPA with contracts in Algeria's oil and defense industries.
