Militants 'kill' 5 in Algeria
Militants 'kill' 5 in Algeria
12/07/2006 15:16 - (SA)
Algiers - Islamist militants shot dead five municipal guards at a campsite in an Algerian coastal town, weeks before the expiry of an amnesty aimed at ending years of strife, said reports on Wednesday.
It was reported that two campers were also wounded after the rebels attacked the site in Larhat, near Tipasa, some 130km west of the capital, Algiers, on Monday night.
According to reports, the five victims were ensuring security for about 50 families at the campsite after the assailants surprised them shortly before midnight.
The rebels set fire to three vehicles and grabbed campers' mobile phones and other personal belongings before fleeing into a forest nearby. The authorities were not immediately available to comment.
The reports didn't identify the attackers, but security experts usually blamed such killings on the al-Qaeda-aligned Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which opposed the amnesty offered by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
The government said about 2 200 jailed rebels had been freed under the amnesty. Those still at large had been offered a pardon provided they were not involved in massacres, rapes and bombings of public places.
The peace offer came into force in February and would expire at the end of August. Violence had subsided in recent years after a decade of civil strife that cost the lives of 200 000 people.

alah yerhemhoum...
Oh..I can't believe things like this are still happening...
I think this is just a bunch of bandits who have nothing to do with Al Qaeda etc.. If they stole mobile phones etc..then I think they're just thieves...
I think we should have a programme on Algerian TV like Crime Watch ...you never know ..people might report the criminals...

There are still many terrorism acts in DZ, even more since the amnesty I'd say.

On the brighter side:
Algerian police and Gendarmerie will be doubling their workforce and will probably deal with the criminality. Add that the amnesty period si coming to an end and I hope those who still kill innocent and non-innocent ppl will be EXTERMINATED
