Algeria hit by surge in guerrilla violence

Samedi 3 Février 2007 - - Quatre jours après l’explosion d’une bombe au siège de l’APC de Ouled Aïssa, les terroristes ont récidivé avant-hier en déposant une autre à l’intérieur du siège de la mairie de Baghlia, commune frontalière avec Ouled Aïssa. Mais cette bombe de forte puissance a pu être désamorcée à temps par une équipe de déminage de l’ANP dépêchée sur les lieux. Selon nos sources, ce sont des citoyens qui ont donné l’alerte après avoir découvert les deux gardiens de l’APC ligotés devant le siège de la mairie. Par ailleurs, une autre bombe a explosé, hier, au stade communal de Benchoud faisant quatre blessés légers parmi les citoyens dont deux joueurs de l’équipe de football locale. La bombe avait été dissimulée à l’intérieur d’une brique en parpaing avant d’être déposée sur le toit des vestiaires quelques minutes seulement avant l’entrée sur le terrain des joueurs de l’équipe de football de Benchoud et son adversaire du jour, l’équipe d’Afir. C’est la deuxième fois en l’espace d’un mois qu’une bombe explose dans un stade en plein déroulement d’une partie de football. La première fois, c’était à Baghlia où une bombe actionnée à distance a fait deux blessés dont un policier. Ces attentats presque tous localisés à l’extrême-est de la wilaya de Boumerdès, qui seraient l’œuvre de la seriat Baghlia écumant la forêt d’Azerouel, laissent penser que le GSPC tente de diversifier ses cibles.

En choisissant les sièges de commissariats, de mairies et les stades, le GSPC nouvelle version tente de justifier maladroitement et tête baissée son allégeance à Al-Qaïda, quitte à s’attaquer à des citoyens sans défense, et de surcroît à des jeunes qui ont choisi de ressembler à Zidane et non à Ben Laden.

Dimanche 4 Février 2007 - - Selon une source bien informée des affaires sécuritaires en Kabylie, la soirée de vendredi a été marquée par une attaque terroriste contre le siège de la garde communale de Aïn-Zaouïa, une quarantaine de kilomètres au sud de Tizi-Ouzou. Une attaque d’une rare violence à laquelle ont résisté les auxiliaires des services de sécurité, précise la même source qui, toutefois, n’a pu déterminer avec exactitude le nombre de terroristes ayant tenté de surprendre les gardes communaux.

Algiers, 6 Feb. (AKI) - Algerian security officials have said they will not only hunt down militants hiding in the country's mountainous areas but also funding and money laundering activities of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, the only Islamist terror group to have remained active in the country. Algerian national security chief Ali al-Tunisi told London-based Arabic daily al-Zaman that the police are training 50 officials who will work to track down funding for GSPC, which has pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda.

An Algerian insurgency started in 1992 after authorities cancelled elections an Islamist party was poised to win.

The insurgency is now mainly conducted by the GSPC with an estimated 500 militants, significantly less than in the 1990s when some 30,000 insurgents operated in the country. Militant strongholds are located in Algeria's mountains and parts of the southern desert and GSPC revenues mainly stem from drug trafficking, kidnappings and extortion.

13/02/2007 - - Bombs exploded near at least three police stations about 100 km (62 miles) east of Algiers early today in apparently coordinated attacks, residents said.

There was no immediate word on casualties. A police official contacted by telephone said officers authorised to speak to the media were not immediately available.

Residents said the police stations were in Draa Benkheda and Meklaa in Tizi Ouzou district, while a third was near Tizi Ouzou town. They said there were unconfirmed reports that the bombs were rigged in vehicles and set off remotely.

Residents near the town of Boumerdes, 50 km (30 miles) east of Algiers, said they were checking reports of a fourth bomb attack on a police station close to the town.

The reported attacks were the first on police stations since near-simultaneous truck bombs exploded at two police stations on October 30 in the Algiers region, killing three people and wounding 24.

The Tizi Ouzou and Boumerdes districts east of Algiers are often the scene of clashes between Islamist guerrillas and security forces in the oil-and-gas-exporting Mediterranean country.

On December 10 a bomb exploded beside a bus carrying foreign oil workers in an upscale Algiers suburb, killing two people and wounding eight.

Algiers, 13 Feb. (AKI) - Five explosions were registered in eastern Algeria on Tuesday morning in attacks targeting police stations in the cities of Tizi Ouzu and Bourmedes, some 30 kilometres east of the capital Algiers, reports said. These areas have been at the centre of recent attacks by the Salafite Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), the only Islamist terror organization to have remained active in the country after it refused a government amnesty last August. Initial reports said the attacks left many dead.

The GSPC is believed to have recently changed its name into the Organization of al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb after it pledged allegiance last year to the international terror network led by Osama bin Laden.
