Algeria was elected vice president of the United Nation's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 2007, the Algerian News Agency (ANA) reported on Thursday.

During the election which took place with the presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Lithuania was elected ECOSOC president while the Philippines, Haiti, Iceland were elected vice presidents together with Algeria whose candidacy to this position was proposed by the African group.

This election "once more again confirms the trust placed on Algeria, especially by African countries and goes further to strengthen Algeria's role as a voice of the countries of the South, " said the ANA.

Made up of 54 member countries, the ECOSOC has the mandate of facilitating international cooperation on standards-making and problem-solving in economic and social issues.
