December 3, 2010 -- A private aircraft carrying the Algerian Defence Minister had to return to Malta shortly after take-off yesterday when one of the wheels did not retract. Malta International Airport confirmed “a technical fault” prevented the left-hand wheel from retracting shortly after the Gulfstream took off at 4.05 p.m. for Algiers. “The fault was resolved by the pilot who then requested permission to land an hour later. Landing was safe and normal,” an MIA spokesman said. The aircraft circled Malta for a while until onboard efforts were made to resolve the situation. It then returned to Malta for the repairs to be made. Algerian Defence Minister Abdelmalek Guenaizia was attending a ministers’ meeting in Malta bringing together representatives of European and North African countries.

    Yasmine Merzouk :

December 3, 2010 -- Mauritania on Thursday (December 2nd) took over the "5+5" Defence Initiative rotating presidency from Malta. Defence ministers from Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia, along with their peers from Spain, France, Italy, Malta and Portugal, were in Malta this week for their annual "5+5" Dialogue Group" meeting. The body gathers Mediterranean basin ministers to forge stronger regional ties. Mauritanian Defence Minister Hamadi Ould Hamadi said he was "overwhelmed by the trust placed in him and his country in being tasked with the presidency" of the Western Mediterranean defence group. The Mauritanian presidency will remain "open to all recommendations" and "spare no effort from getting the job done", Ould Hamadi said.
