In August 1982 a devout Muslim beekeeper found honeycombs in one of his beehives, in the village of Karakoy, Turkey where the bees had written in large and clear letters the most beautiful name of the essence of God: Allah.
And Allah says in the Holy Qur'an:
And thy Lord revealed to the bee: make your honeycomb in the mountains and in the trees and in the hives which men build, and eat all the flowers and fruits and do in the way of thy Lord submissively. There comes forth from their bellies a liquid of many hues, in which there is healing for men. Therein is surely a sign for men who reflect.
(Sura Al Nahl, THE BEE, verses 68-69)
Interestingly, honey has lately been in the news and medical journals describing its possible cancer fighting properties. And then there are those that doubt Al-deen (Islam).

Interestingly.....
Interestingly.....no-one has cured cancer yet with honey, yet they have identified certain elements of genetic code that cause it. These DNA codes were identified via scientific methods not by religious ones.

Hello Zahoo
Thank you so much for your kind words of welcome.
I must apologise for my lack of clarity. I confess I was typing during the commercial break of 'Miss Marple' on the UKTV Drama channel. 'Murder at the Vicarage' - not one of Agatha Christie's best books, but I have been enjoying the series so far. I think I prefer her 'Poirot' books better. Do you enjoy Agatha Christie? Have you seen 'The Mousetrap' play?
The honey thing - I did not mean that honey causes cancer. Sorry to have concerned you. I meant that certain genetic strands that cause certain cancers, have been identified through scientific research, not religion.
I must point out that 'cancer' is a generic term. There are so many different cancers, with different causes, I think it is misleading to assume that one 'cure' will cure them all.
The term 'cancer' is like the term 'rash' - a broadly based description for certain symptoms, that can be caused by many different diseases, probably requiring separate specific cures. For example, the cure for certain stomach tumours caused by the heliopylora bacteria, will not cure brain tumours, because the cause of these diseases are different, although the symptoms (malignant tumours) are similar.
I am aware of the psychosomatic elements of healing, in which faith plays a great part. Psychosomatic treatment more often helps the patient to alter their perception of the symtpoms, and by reducing stress, helps to cure certain diseases, by allowing the immune system to function more effectively. Stress itself, raises cortisol and adrenaline levels. These exascerbate disease by retarding the immune system.
However, we need to aim to acquire knowledge via the scientific method, to accurately identify and fully understand our environment, and the threats such as disease, or geological activity, within it.
Praying did not provide the cure for cholera or typhoid. Scientific research did. Praying however, did give some 'peace of mind' to the sufferers and their loved ones.
With regard to honey, yes I agree many modern drugs have been developed from natural phenomena. For example, the contraceptive pill was developed by Carl Djerassi - a Tunisian jew living in America, from the plant oestrogen of a tree that grows in Latin America. It was refined and tested scietifically, to produce the products we know today.
There is currently much legal debate as to who owns these 'intellectual properties' such as plant DNA. Should the people whose country produces such plants from which the drugs are derived, be entitled to a 'royalty' on the sales of the drugs?
The big drug companies obviously are arguing they do not. Personally, I think that the drug companies DO owe something to local people, if local people provide the initial clue that a certain plant or naturally occurring phenomena has healing properties, or if the DNA can only be found in their country's habitat.
What do you think?
Best wishes
D

There isn't a problem, in my view, with comparing Islam and Science. It is an actual "fact" that many scientists have converted to Islam because of their scientific findings. A lot of the revelations that research has discovered was prewritten in a book 1500 years ago. The Quran is the only ground for sanity for muslims at this period of test (especially now). So, we should understand that it is important for us to compare and connect the ideas or discoveries that our hard working scientists uselessly achieve.
Lately, scientists have been conducting research, using the Quran el karim. So, I think that it is very wise to uphold the holy book and declare our full support for Allah. It's not an accident that so much science is in the Quran.Last edited by Al-khiyal; 21st June 2007 at 17:26.
