The Tottenham Ayatollah Revisited
In 1997, journalist and documentary-maker Jon Ronson spent a year making a film about Omar Bakri Mohammed, one of Britain's most high-profile Islamic extremists, and one of whom the government has said he won't be allowed to return to the UK. Since the London attacks of July 7th, Muslim clerics like Omar Bakri have found themselves under an intense media spotlight, and the government has responded with a clampdown on their activities and the threat of deportations. Channel 4 is re-screening The Tottenham Ayatollah with a new introduction from Ronson. The documentary, wry in tone, follows a year in the life of Bakri, who dreams of seeing the Black Flag of Islam flying over Downing Street. Ronson gained intimate access to the normally clandestine Omar, a well known anti-Semite and campaigner against homosexuality, lesbianism, adultery and fornication. The film follows his revolutionary mission to make Britain an Islamic state, from buying collection boxes for Hamas at the Cash and Carry to attending his secret Jihad training camp in a Crawley scout hut, while meetings with other Islamic Fundamentalists are conducted over choc ices and fishing weekends.

Salam Houda,
I dont know if you've noticed but what is the point of airing a tv programme between 12am - 1am.
Why are most of these programmes being shown so late at night. Is it to attract minimal audience. Is it cause the programme has something to do with Islam?
Just a trend I've noticed about these TV listings.
Thanx for the info sis.
Khokom.

Saha Khokom,
You should have noticed that not only these prgm are broadcasted very late, but every 'cultural' prgm starts after 11 pm (on any generalist channel). Always related to consumerism, cultural programs don't gather the audience u may get from a tv reality prgm or a blockbuster movie.
So to answer your question, it is not to attract minimum audience but because it attracts minimum audience.
Generalist TV stations no longer shape the ppl way of thinking but r mainly followers: more audience, more ads.
On the other hand, if anyone is interested by the prgm, he/she only has to sleep at 8 pm and wakeup 4h later

I see your point Phylay. These kinda programmes are important though, they are not just cultural, but educative and they increase ppl's awareness of whats going on.
Islam nowadays is a hot topic, and when something negative happens (e.g terrorism) the media wouldnt waste one second to trash the image of Islam (breaking news: islamic terrorists attack bla bla bla)
However, when the programme is to do with educating people about Islam (And its crucial UK ppl are educated about Islam since its a hot topic), or giving an insight into society from an Islamic angle,... when do you get such a programme? At 1am.
If you want to learn about Islam from UK TV, wake up at 1am.
Take care kho,
Khokom.
