The Road to 9/11
The Road to 9/11 examines the forces that have shaped the modern Middle East and yielded a crisis that now threatens global stability. A month after 9/11, Osama bin Laden recorded a video message celebrating the attacks. Praising his followers as "the vanguards of Islam", he twice referred to the historical roots of his rage, citing the "humiliation and disgrace" that the Middle East has suffered for "more than 80 years." Most Westerners had no idea what bin Laden was referring to. His Muslim listeners, however, were not confused. The Road to 9/11 charts the history of the Islamic World over the last 80 years, featuring interviews with leading scholars and rare archive footage. The film surveys the last century, from the First World War and the carving up of the Ottoman Empire by the British and French, through the ensuing decades of westernisation across the region. Charting the steady deterioration of social, political and economic conditions, and examining the alliance of clerics and authoritarian regimes funded by oil money, The Road to 9/11 chronicles what many perceive as the misuse of the Koran, the erosion of women's rights and the rise of religious extremism, violence and terrorism.
