Globe Trekker: Iran

Ian starts his journey in Tehran, the busy and polluted capital, where he visits the Shrine of the Ayatollah, last resting-place of Khomeini. After skiing in Dizin, he travels 300 miles to Bandare - E Torkaman on the Caspian coast, where he goes sturgeon fishing and sees a Turkman wrestling bout, before embarking on a 22-hour train journey to Esfahan, Iran's most popular tourist destination. Taking a flight to Shiraz, he experiences the Islamic festival of Ashura, treks out to find the Qashqai Nomads in the south of Iran, then hitch hikes to the 2500-year-old city of Persepolis and the magnificent Citadel at Bam which was sadly destroyed in an earthquake.

Iran Hostage Rescue

Recreation of Operation Eagle Claw, in which the Americans tried to rescue 66 hostages that had been taken when Iranian militants seized the US embassy in Tehran in November 1979. After diplomatic attempts to negotiate their release failed, five months after their capture President Carter commanded an elite US Military force to launch a top secret rescue operation which would end in disaster and cost him his presidency.

We travel overland from Istanbul, once the capital of the Byzantine Empire, through the strange landscape of Cappadoccia to Adana, home of Turkey's largest contemporary mosque. Next - ancient Mesopotamia, Turkey's fertile farming region where nomadic Kurds harvest for a few dollars a week. In Antalya, the church where Saint Peter is reputed to have said the first mass is a timely reminder that the Middle East was the birthplace of Christianity.

The cradle of civilisation is the location for this fascinating series, where Irish writer Manchan Magan takes us on an odyssey through the Middle East. Beirut, South Lebanon, the Golan Heights, Palestine: these names will resound forever with the tragedies of the past 4 decades. Today, we travel overland charting the painful recent history of the region, visiting the birthplace of poet and writer Kahlil Kibrain, a Palestinian refugee camp, where three generations of displaced people live in dire economic circumstances, and in South Lebanon, a town that was hit by a phosphorous bomb which killed 120 people. We arrive in Bethlehem just two days after Sharon made his ill-fated visit to the Temple Mount, which triggered the Intifada.
